re: tourists in Times Square

One of the most entertaining things I've ever witnessed was a Three Card Monty guy "winning" a hundred bucks from a couple of trailer park Southerners. These two might as well have had tee-shirts saying, "We've never been to the big city before. Please rip us off!"

I love tourists! They come with their cameras, and they always wait for the light to turn to "walk!" lol. I was born in the city, but now I live about an hour outside of it in Connecticut. I still go there every single chance I get (I have to or I start to feel depressed), and I love seeing shows. (That wasn't my choice... re: tourists in Times Square) Anyway, a lot of times my class at school (I'm a high school freshman) will take field trips to the Met or something. I usually end up leading the group around... you wouldn't believe how many people in Connecticut haven't been to NYC. They are always going, "Slow down! Wait... where are we going? Wait!" It's really funny because when I'm in the city I walk kind- of fast. I wouldn't call my friends tourists, but they're not New Yorkers either! :) Love to all the touristss... :)

Tourists in Toronto are also hilarious. I was on the train once going from NYC to Toronto, and as soon as we passed the border, the american preteen girls next to me started to complain about how cold it is (even though it was mid-summer, and very hot). It's as if there is some sort of imaginary temperature barrier between US and Canada that only Americans can feel.

My favourite toronto tourists are the overdressed ones who were expecting it to be cold (Someone needs to tell them that 35 degrees celcius is not the same as 35 ferenheit)

*rotf* Jera, it's so true. Same with tourists in Vancouver, which is probably one of the mildest Canadian cities, but you KNOW the foreigners are the ones who arrive in the airport with a parka and a toque in October. *weeps* I also love the ones who arrive in Immigration/Customs are are totally shocked that...Canada looks like the U.S. (Seriously. Go figure.) You'd think we live in trees during the summer and igloos in the winter!

(Another threadjack - Jera, what train company can you take btwn Toronto/NYC? I'm looking at my options for this year.)

Ew, I HATE that! When I was in the city with both of my parents for the first time, they did that and my sister and I were mortified. When my dad made some jay-walking comment, we pointed out the fact that if NYPD Blue, and all the Law & Order offspring taught us anything, it's that the police in NYC have better things to do than write tickets for people crossing empty streets.

re: tourists in Times Square

Well, to be fair, they're not exactly empty streets. They're very congested streets which makes the traffic move slowly. Plus I'm convinced the cab drivers accelerate and slam on the brakes at 3 second intervals, just anticipating a wayward jaywalker to jump in front of them. I absolutely detest jaywalkers, but I do it in the city. When I'm driving at home though, I slam on the gas and give a friendly smile as they bolt out of my way.

re: tourists in Times Square

Heh. We went back to NYC for a few days when I was 15, and I was...well, a little nervous. We were on our way back to our hotel one night and this drunk guy was following us (or so I thought) and, of course, I was freaking out. We used to live in NYC until I was 4, and my parents were well-versed in ignoring people. My mom allayed my fears by saying "All we have to do is nudge him and he'll fall over."
And I was surprised about the traffic, not there was so much of it or that people walk between lights (hell, who doesn't?), but that the cabs didn't stop when the WALK sign lit up. I actually wanted to say "'Ey! I'm walkin' 'ere!"

What sucks is coming back home after New York, and jaywalking, and almost getting a ticket...

And then you realize. Jaywalking is actually illegal.

re: tourists in Times Square

I think Times Square is amazing, but once I started spending more time in the city, it became a lot less desirable. I love the more quaint neighborhoods, like down by Washington Square Park, or near Gramercy Park. It has just as much character, and is not nearly as expensive! Why someone would choose to eat at Planet Hollywood in Times Square over one of the millions of restaurants in other parts of the city is beyond me, especially if they aren't just in town for a show and have time to wander.

As for all the people, I just don't get the ones with the VIDEO cameras. Do they really go home and watch the buildings and the cars go by? Any busy area will be full of people, but sometimes, the pace of Times Square is ridiculous.

re: tourists in Times Square

If tourists say ooh & ahh now, they would have fainted over Times Square in the 40's. So much has gone

I have to admit that years ago, when I was young & mischievious, a tourist asked me where a good inexpensive restaurant was. I told him where to go - The Orange Room @ Nedicks

I was such a scamp in my younger days

re: tourists in Times Square

I have to share... last December, I was up for the day (took the kids to the theatre, etc.) We took them to THE tree, and while we were there, this tremendously sophisticated tourist looks at the tree, and says to her friend: "this isn't the REAL tree... the REAL tree is across the street" - ummm... NO! Sorry, just thought that was incredibly funny...

Tourists are fine, usually. They come, spend money, and I don't really care.

But, when it's 7:30 in the morning and I'm on my way to work, it can get kind of annoying when a family from Peoria is taking pictures of a street sign.

re: tourists in Times Square

I guess I shouldn't say that I took a picture of a 5th avenue street sign in front of the plaza......

Whenever my wife & I are in Times Square, I repeatedly give her what used to be here tour. Real tourists are sometime in awe of the vast amount of totally useless trivia I know about Times Square
