If you have a fenced in yard, take the kitty out for a little spell at a time, they will learn to stay in their own yard, especially if you supervise. My cats stay in the yard and lounge around. They like to be outdoors, but would not do ok if they are unattended. They would wander off and get lost.
Also, if your cat is young enough you can leash train them. Then you can put them outside on a tether or even walk them. They also sell kitty corrals, which are soft-screened play areas that a cat can be outside in, but cannot wander off. Sometimes they just like the fresh air and the views.

depends on the age of the cat. My cat was maybe 9mos when I rescued him, and he was just damn happy to have a home, and for the next 16 years if I even tried to take him outside he freaked.
When he was in the doorway with a screendoor and a window in front of him, he was all macho kitty, but if I took him out in my arms, it's like he hiked up his skirts and dashed inside......
if it's an older cat, it's going to be difficult.

monk is a little over a year old.
he goes outside and we want to keep him in beacuse he gets in fights and brings deer mice home and he goes really far and we worry he will get lost or hit by a car.
we have a fenced in yard... my old cat lucky used to just lounge around the yard and lay on the deck, and the older cat we still have, ed, never goes futher than the next yard, but sometimes we see monk down the street.
he doesn't currently have a collar since every time we put one on him and let him out, he comes back without it. he's been through 6 collars already.
he was originally going to be an indoor cat untill he escaped one day and when he found his way home again, we weren't worried untill he started going far away.

Posted: 9/8/06 at 1:25pmMy cat FREAKKED when we moved last year. When we opened the door at one point she ran out into the hall (indoor apt entrance)then stopped, turned around and ran back in and onto the familiar couch we had from before.
