does anyone else think that this is the most horrible premise of reality tv yet? they hold a fake talent contest and tell all of the horrible acts that they have a chance at superstardom, then when the winner is chosen, they tell them that they are actaully the worst singer in america.

im just offended by the entire idea, and what is worse is that they tell the good singers that they are bad, thus possibly destroying the self-esteem of those who actually have talent.

i got the impression that america was slightly... i dont know... emotionally sadistic (?) when we started watching people eat bugs and laugh at people getting their ambitions crushed, but this is just too much!

Yeah, I agree. It's disgusting, sadistic, cynical and promotes the talentless schmucks who don't deserve superstardom OR embarrssment.

I'll be watching next week. re: wb's superstar usa

Don't bother moving to Canada. That's where I live, and not one, but TWO stations are airing it! :) If this wasn't a nearly anonymous cyber forum, I may have the grace to be ashamed of my TV choices. (Anyone watching The Joe Schmo Show 2? YAY!)

For the first time in my adult life, I have to say that this one is like a train wreck - much as you want to, you just can't tear your eyes away. I think the premise is horrible and feel really bad for all the people getting taken advantage of - but I will admit I watched about half of it last night and howled out loud at how funny it was...I will try to curb myself and not watch it any more - but as I said - TRAIN WRECK...

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

i love it! i think it's a brilliant idea. face it folks, if a person is that desperate for attention and notice i say give it to 'em! it's punk'd on a grand scale. and face it, they had to sign a waver and could have walked away. the fact that some of these folks think they are talented is proof enough why the show should exist. it's like a national bad karaoke bar.

The whole deception of uilding someone up and them crushing them is what really offends me about this whole concept. I'm not sure why people think humiliating others is entertainment. But then, I can't onestly believe that these "contestants" have no idea what is going on. I think the whole thing is a big ugly stupid sham. I saw the commercials and I agree with the term "sadistic". The concept is sadistic and those who view it as entertainment are sadistic as well. Why don't we just buy a bag of popcorn and view a public flogging or execution? Won't that be fun?

I thought my sadistic side would find it funny, but I couldn't even watch the entire first episode. It was just stupid and bad. Maybe if it were the American Idol Judges were doing the judging, but this show is not even worth watching for the judges commentary.

thanks mister matt and theater baby.

this concept is far from brilliant, its just mean, hurtful, cruel add your own negative adjective here, a lot of them apply. if a person is that desperate for attention, then they can always go to AI and be told how horrible they are, its difficult for me to watch but it is the truth, and in the long run they benefit from it. this show just reminds me so much of the carrie premise, and no one laughes at the prom scene in that movie- can you honestly tell me, papa, that you'll crack up when the host says "we lied to you, you are actually the worst singer in america," and this already dillusional person has to face that reality (as yes, they should, BUT...) on NATIONAL TELEVISON, and in front of their friends and loved ones? their isnt anything funny about that. and im not just saying that "in my opinion, it just isnt funny," im saying that in my opinion, it just shouldnt be funny to anyone.

The people used to love going to executions during the French Revolution. It was a public affair there was seating and everything. Children would even go. The people loved and reveled in it. Of course, the people being killed usually took the high road and accepted their fate quietly. It was only when peope began to struggle with all their might kicking, crying, and screaming did people begin to see what it really was. There is a sick side to our psyche. To deny that is the biggest mistake you can make. If you deny you are capable of something like that, you are much more likely to do it.

my reaction to this show is that i flip to it during commercials of american idol and exclaim loudly "THIS IS SUCH A BAD SHOW. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS." yet i still sit there and watch it, at least for a few minutes. it really is horrible ... but i think the absolute worst part of it is that they tell the good singers that they are horrible and they leave crying. we have to deal with enough people that think they're wonderful when they aren't... what a way to screw with the minds of thousands of people...

sonofagunn -

"The people used to love going to executions during the French Revolution. It was a public affair there was seating and everything."

Which has been considered barbaric now for a couple of centuries.

"Their [sic] is a sick side to our psyche. To deny that is the biggest mistake you can make. If you deny you are capable of something like that, you are much more likely to do it."

There has always been a sick side to the human psyche. No one is denying that. But there is a reason it is called "sick" and not "normal". I'm not denying it exists. I am saying it is a choice I make not to partake in the suffering and sorrow of others as entertainment.

nystateofmind -

"this show just reminds me so much of the carrie premise, and no one laughes at the prom scene in that movie"

You're absolutely right. It was in the musical where everyone laughed.

You all know I love you more than my luggage, but Lighten Up!!! It's just a fun show. People humiliate themselves all the time by drinking cow semen or eating horse dick, than so what if no talent people want to go on TV and sing and make fools of themselves. Even in American Idol, everyone who auditions signs a contract saying that they give FOX the right to use their image anyway they see fit and it includes making fun of them. They know the possibility going in. Same with this show.

Even if they are signing a contract, I doubt most of them go in with the premise that they will be mocked to such a degree. AI contestants know that if they are not good they will be told right away and that will be a little embarrassng. The contestants on this show are like pieces on a chess board being played. They are being lied to, and that's what makes it wrong IMHO.
