here's the deal:
i applied for a job at the mall several months ago. they weren't hiring at the time but they took my application and said they would call me when they were hiring.
this is a store i am in almost every weekend and i know the manager from being in there alot and he would always keep me up to date on when they could hire people.
he kept saying the date was being pushed back for various reasons but funally gave me a date when they would hire by, june 15th
he took my home and call numbers and saud he would call me the week before, but if for some reason i didn't hear from him, to come in that week.
i went in and the date had been pushed back again. he said one of the managers left and he couldn't hire any sale associates untill they got a second manager.
this whole time, he had kind of been hinting that there was a good chance i'd get the job.
he told me he would call me before he did the other applications since most of them were form kids who went in to drop off the application and never came back.
today i went there to buy a shirt. while i was there i ran into a friend of mine who said they had been saying the same things to her for even longer. i talked to one of the people who worked there and she said the manager would be in tomarrow so i could come back then to talk to him.
i got my shirt, went to go pay for it, and the kid behind the counter wasn't anyone i'd seen before. he didn't know what to do with the frequent buyer card and had to call someone over to ask. after he was finished he said to me "thank you for being patient with me. it's my first day." i said "oh are you the new manager?" and he said "no i just started part time"
i told my mom about it and she sai dthat sometimes they hire their friends and string everyone else along.
how can i find out if this is the case without sounding rude? i just really need to know so that if they aren't going to hire me or even interveiw me, i can look for a job at a different store.

Sorry AR, that sucks! I know what it's like, favouritism, essentially. I asked ages ago if I could get a job supervising for the exams in my school this year. They said they'd keep in touch. And then, even though they still had my correspondence in the office and I'd asked repeatedly, they just went and asked a couple of guys in my year, who would be more in favour with the school. lets say, to do it and I didn't even find out until after they had agreed to do it.
Maybe this new person that they hired also went to the store many more times than you to apply for this job. So don't get frustrated.
Well... as they say, you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. I would continue hounding them for a job, but also look elsewhere. The first one to give you the job gets to have you, and the others lose.
i'm not upset that they hired another person and not me (if that's even the case) i'm upset that they told me they could not hire someone till they got a new manager at the end of the month, and then did.
this wasn't even a big deal before but now there is a cats only vet opening near my house soon and i would love to work in their grooming department. i have much more grooming experience than i do retail, but i dont know how to find out if they're going to hire me at the mall or not.
Abba-don't give up because you never know. Yes, they may have hired a friend or a relative, but you have no idea how long he will last. People are quitting jobs left and right for various reasons.
Don't ask the manager if he intends to hire you or not because I'm sure he has no idea at this point. You may be in the right place at the right time.
Just apply at other places too, if you will accept a job somewhere else other than that store.
What an annoying situation - I'm sorry. I would apply to other places, if you'd be happy working somewhere else, and if this comes through, you could always take it instead. I would go about the job hunt assuming this one isn't going to work out though, you know? Better to have more options. Good luck!
thanks... i drive by cats limited every day... i'll probably stop and see when they're opening and if there's a number to call there.
grooming/bathing cats is something i really enjoy, but the 40% discount at the mall would have been nice too.
Day hit the nail on the head...keep looking, and let the guy know you are still interested
