i haven't given it much thought as it's still so far away and we have no real idea who the nominees will actually be (well, pj and i have our suspicions), but given the animosity that already exists, if a republican were to win in '08, how would the country react?
would the hatred that is supposedly all about bush dissipate at all or would it merely intensify immediately against whoever took his place?
would a new face be given any grace period or would there be revolution in the streets as soon as the win was confirmed?
now granted, i'm suggesting that the winner wins by a clear margin, not a 2000 court appointment.
how do you think the country would react?
I think the country will react the same way the characters did in the finale of The Howling (just saw it on AMC
)
There will be disbelieve for a few biblical seconds and then we'll go back to their American Gladiators or American Idol or whatever else keeps us distracted.

OK. that was just my "I want everyone to know I love The Howling and Bill Hicks" answer. (See guys, there are plenty of attention whores on this board that have the "it's all about me" syndrome.

I would hope that we would welcome a new chapter in our history. That no matter who won, we would bring the U.S. Constitution back into our government.

IMHO, it's very possible a republican could take 08, particularly if the democrats screw up as mightily as they did in 04 (Talk about blowing an opportunity!). But we would probably still see a congress held by democrats, so it would become a do-nothing situation.
Insofar as ""would the hatred that is supposedly all about bush dissipate at all or would it merely intensify immediately against whoever took his place?" -- face it, there is no "supposedly" about it. The man has been a walking nightmare for this country, and the folks bearing pitchforks and torches (whose numbers grow daily, in case you missed the memo) are well within their rights to do so. But whether or not it would conitnue on to the next administration will depend completely on who's in office. If there's even the slightest taint of the presence of people like Rove or Cheney or Rice, I doubt many folks will tolerate it.
when you say "tolerate it" what exactly do you foresee? rioting in the streets? armed insurrection? or merely a lot of editorials, vitriolic blog entries and continued toothless resolutions in the congress?
I'm constantly astounded by how much people hate Bush (that's your perogative), but seemingly give a pass to the deplorable Congress we have. It's always about the President.
The Bush administration skirted dangerously close to insurrection, IMHO. The only thing keeping that man alive right now is wall upon wall of barriers and secret service police and God only knows what else. Frankly, I was amazed to see him at a Town Hall meeting yesterday, since the overwhelming majority of his appearances thus far have been to "safe haves", like military forts and hardcore Republican dinners (and you note how few he's been at thus far in the campaign). It's not that his "aw shucks" popularity is sinking like a stone; people are finally seeing him for the delusional "leader" he truly is, and frankly one would have to be a blind idiot not to be outraged at the cost in money and manpower the foolish little "war on terror" has been.
And yes, Mambo, I *do* see revolution if things continue on this path. To be blunt, we're long past due.
johnboy, the Congress is made up of both Republicans and Democrats. The job they do is a result of the two parties.
What pass are you referring to?

ok, that's one vote for revolution. any more?
I'm not getting your point, Chita.
Congressional Job Approval
According to the June 11-14, 2007, survey, 24% of Americans approve and 71% disapprove of the way Congress is handling its job. Congressional approval is down five points since last month and more than 10 points from the higher support levels in January and February following the Democratic takeover. The current 24% rating is similar to the poor ratings Congress received last year, with Americans essentially voting to take control of Congress away from the Republicans in November.

In my opinion, the presidency had been there for the taking in both 2000 and 2004. If not for totally inept campaigning by the dems in both elections, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Personally, I do not know who will get my vote in 2008. I don't know if it will be a democrat or republican. I just hope either party can nominate a candidate who can galvanize those of us who are yearning for the right leader. Personally, I hope Iraq gets resolved as soon as possible so it doesn't dominate the 2008 election. As important as it is, I care just as much about the economy, gun control, immigration, equal rights, and many other issues.
i have a feeling that despite the low poll numbers for congress nationally, jb2 is speaking specifically about here at bww. perhaps a few "impeach pelosi" or "why does reid hate america?" or "democratic congress approval ratings lower than a snake's belly in a wagon rut" threads here would make him happy(ier).
I'm talking about this Board. I never see any ire directed toward Congress. No reason to get snippy about it. When I said I didn't get your point, it was a legitimate comment. I was hoping you'd explain it. But, never mind.
well search chita1933 or chita33iscontrite or even chita33, all me, and you will read about my ire with Clinton (both) and Pelosi and Reid and the rest of the sheep in our party.
I wasn't being snippy if you weren't.

JohnBoy, I am a sarcastic person by nature and design. When I read your one line remark/question, it sounded more like "so what" than "really, why?"
I apologize for my misreading of your post.

robbo, you rude, thoughtless little pig! i'm gonna straighten your ass out!
only if you two can behave, chita.
No problem, Chita. I'm up for Dorney Park! It's been years...
Currently, the democrats are howling while taking their victory lap for 2008. They have ALL of the momentum.
Thompson/Giuliani could win. I am amazed that the democrats are on TV every day gloating. A lot can happen between now and November, 2008.
If a Republican actually wins, some of our major urban centers will blow up. They can not take another defeat.
Right now, it looks like President Hillary and Vice-President Obama.
Papa,
I don't really see any GOP candidate having a chance right now; Thompson is going to be shredded when he enters.
That said, I certainly fear another win (albeit legitimate this time) by the Republicans.
I don't think there is that much hate for Bush. Though his approval ratings are low, we are at war and will be in 2008. The Democrats fail to see the power of unity on the right. Look at the way Democrats rip Sheehan or Moore to shreds when they speak out on valid issues. If George Bush were a Democrat, Republicans would have united and impeached him long ago. Most democrats lack the spine, balls and most important a Rove to back controversial issues.
It will come down to Ohio and Florida again, and at this point, I don't think we have a chance. I think the only thing that will rile people in this country is a draft or maybe a ban on guns.
I'm not sure either the right or the left is all that well organized right now. The right has been operating under the misguided assumption that people will *always* follow their leader during wartime, and the poll numbers for Bush have put that myth out the door. But without Iraq, what does the right have? Specious issues like gay marriage and stem cell research and whether or not mentions of God should be on our currency. And the left is no better, with calls for troop withdraws that it knows the Shrub will veto again and again, which makes everything into a "show issue" and little more.
I wouldnt discount the GOP pulling it off and finding a candidate that will actually speak to the middle-of-the-road voter, just like it's remotely possible the Democrats will as well. *Then* the race could get *really* interesting all around.
