Tradition, most likely. And it is rapidly changing. In LA, everyone uses colour now, and NYC is following suit.
I recently got digital colour shots (see avatar) and I think they look MUCH better than B&W.

The art of b&w photography is unfortunately being lost, but some of the most gorgeous pictures to come out of Hollywood were done that way.
<---- As it happens, the headshot for Adam Pascal that just went up on IMDb is b&w and looks great, I think.

Posted: 12/7/05 at 4:20pmTheatre is really the only form that still prefers B&W. It seems more and more common for color prints to be submitted in film/tv work. In fact, some castind directors prefer color -- almost everyone prefers color for a redheaded person.

Here's the progression that I have seen in Chicago:
Black & White Glossy with a Border
Black & White Matte Finish without a Border
Black & White Matte Finish of Square Image in Rectangle. Lotsa borders.
Horizontal Headshots
Color
Rest assured that a few months after you get your headshots printed, there will be a new fad.
I'm a Black & White kinda guy; I think it looks classier.

Posted: 12/7/05 at 4:22pmI'm of the opinion that everyone is more attractive in b&w!

Posted: 12/7/05 at 6:00pmIt's cheaper to produce in black and white. Although the trend is now moving to color, it is always safe to use black and white. No one will question it.

Posted: 12/7/05 at 6:03pmI always thought it was cheaper. And everything doesn't look quite as "busy" as if it werein color.
