I was at work yesterday and while on my lunch i sat back listening to Side Show on my CD player and a woman w/ me in the breakroom asked what I was listening to:
Natalie: What's that you're listening to?
Lauren (Me): Side Show? It's a musical.
N: A musical?
L: You know, a Broadway musical...
N: They make CDs of those things?
L: Yes...
N: That's weird. I've never- what does it sound like? is it like "oooh ohhhhhhhoohhh" *imitating opera-sounding 80s music*
L: no, not really *lets natalie listen to the song (Private Conversation)*
N: Oh, um....ok. I've never heard of someone like, buying and listening to that stuff.
L: Yeah, it's pretty common...you know, showtunes?
N: I know what West Side Story is.
L:....um....*blank face*....OK.

There was this girl at my school who was very confused about what broadway was. I was talking to another buddy of mine about planning a NYC trip to see some shows and suddenly this girl asks, "Wait, there's more than one theatre?"
Me: What do you mean?
Girl: Well, Broadway's a theatre right
Me: Broadway's Theatre, is that what you mean?
G: But there's more than one
M: No, there's only one Broadway
G: How can there be only one Broadway but there be more than one theatre
M: Broadway in New York City is a street full of theatres
G: Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, well you keep refering to "The Broadway Theatre" so I though there was only one
It was a good thing my other buddy was there or I might have either attacked this girl for not knowing or slit my wrists at the sad state of theatre education in today's school systems.

Other Person: Thats nice

It makes me fear for the future of the world whenever I hear of people who have never been exposed to showtunes.
A little less emo + A lot more showtunes = A lot of better people

broadwaystar2b...do I know about this conversation? Is it the one I'm thinking of? ::shakes head::
I also love how people think RENT is a typical opera...highly amusing.

I'm not sure if you were there or not, but it was on the way to some pep rally or some "event" in the gym.
I love how the family season subscribers go to Rent thinking it's just another Broadway musical. Then the amps come on...

Not exactly on topic but when I have the army call and ask me what I am majoring in (Music Ed with a minor in theatre), they get really quiet for a few seconds, then quickly say thank you and goodbye. I LOVE MY MAJOR!

"A little less emo + A lot more showtunes = A lot of better people"
Can I get an amen? My ex-boyfriend would go to countless hard core emo shows to scream songs about hating girlfriends and so on. He'd always ask me, why do you like Broadway shows? "Well, I don't know, they make me happy, as opposed to making me want to slit my wrists?" Emo is fine in moderation but come on now...

I love showtunes because of the lyrics, personally. Some of the music out there is just mindless, repetitive, too loud junk, but showtunes have to tell a story, so the lyrics are usually much more thoughtful.
Soccer moms and eight year olds at Rent make me laugh.

Son of- I love the story!
And guys, although showtunes are wonderful, you can't expect everyone to know what it is, and listen to it. To them, showtunes are stupid, cheesy, boring, etc. Of course they're wrong, but we're all different. If this whole world listened to musicals...hmm..
#20re: you've never heard of showtunes?
Posted: 8/9/04 at 1:10pmThat is one of the reasons I tell people I love broadway. The music tells a story. I am a sucker for music that tells a story. I mean if you really listen to a lot of crap that is out there. It is saying the same thing over and over again. That's not interesting to me. Peole who only listen to one style of music baffle me too. That's like only watching football only and no other sport. You are missing a lot of great stuff. That is the synonym I like to use because it is one most people I know can relate.

broadwaystar2b, I thought you were referring to the incident at lunch..."So where is Broadway anyway? Is it like an actual place?" It makes me even sadder that there's another one...
And yeah, subscribers and RENT...last time I went the entire orchestra section was full of little old ladies and the balcony was filled with people my age...twas amusing. Most of the orchestra seats were empty after intermission...
