09/10 Broadway Season - The British Invasion??

After last night's Tonys, in which 14 of the 27 awards were won by Brits, it looks like the second British invasion could be coming to Broadway.

So far in the 2009/2010 Broadway Season, there are two confirmed British productions - the Menier revivals of A Little Night Music and La Cage aux Folles.

Joining these two shows could be as many as 5 other British grown productions:

1. The Sound of Music - the Andrew Lloyd Webber revival may make the trip from Toronto to New York. With the current screenings of "Any Dream Will Do" and "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?" on BBC America, it would make complete sense for the Lord to have a US version of the later show, casting a new Maria for a new Broadway revival.

2. Sunset Boulevard - the Watermill revival has been oft-rumoured to open during the next year in New York. However, with its recent closing in London these plans may have been shelved.

3. Sister Act - Whoopi has made it quite obvious she plans to bring the show to New York fairly soon, possibly in the fall of 2009 or the spring of 2010.

4. Hamlet - an article appeared in the New York Post today about the current Donmar Jude Law-led revival of Hamlet at Wyndham's. Supposedly, a few New York producers are flying over in the next two weeks to check it out, and we could very possibly be seeing the show in New York in time for the 2010 Tonys.

5. Love Never Dies - originally planned for this season, but with the recent schedule change, it is still to be seen if the Lord will open his newest show in New York by June 2010.

Are there any other London to Broadway transfers anyone here has heard talk of?

I think War Horse has a shot on transferring to Broadway although the failure of Coram Boy would put producers off transferring it but I could see it at Circle in the Square or even The Vivian Beaumount if or when South Pacific closes.

One or two of the other Donmar West End Season plays could transfer, Ivanov and Madame De Sade being my choices.

With the success of Calender Girls, I wouldn't be surprised if the producers try and bring it to Broadway for a limited run although I'm not sure if it will appeal to Broadway audiences.

Why does everybody ignore the fact that Sister Act is by an American creative team (book/score) and was developed and workshopped in the US as well?

Sunset is 100% on its way to the Great White Way and will be announced in a few months.
New York had a ery shaky production of The Sound Of Music about 15 years ago so now, with the new production already sitting in Toronto maybe they will get the Palladium production.

I saw the 1998 Broadway revival - the full phyisical production came to Australia in 2000 - and loved it. The sets and costumes were beautiful (it used a revolving house, with all the living room scenes set on the terrace) and I remember the final image of the cast literally climbing every mountain (aka the backdrop).

How was it "ery shaky"?

Sunset definitely deserves it shot of fame on Broadway.

Sound of Music this is a bit far fetched, New York has always been a hard sell for revivals and notorious for not doing great business, well this is true up to now, where South Pacific, West Side Story is dis-proving my theory, love to be proved wrong.

Not ignored but feelings and perceptions come into play here, as well as facts. The producers chose to open it in the West End over Broadway.

If we deal with facts alone then is Miss Saigon a British, American or French musical? It's perceived as being British because it feels like a British product of that period.

Just like Sister Act to me personally feels like a Broadway musical having an out-of-town tryout in the West End.

But to many others it feels like what is selling in the West End at the moment: big, splashy, loud and raucous musicals.

I don't know that having a revival of The sound Of Music cast by a reality show is going to be a good idea. They can't do it on BBC America because it isn't a common channel that everyone gets. I think that if they did a reality show it would have to be on one of the basic channels that everyone regardless of if they have cable or not will be able to watch.

I also think that theatre is a thing that has a niche audience and no one cares about it in America unless they are already interested in it. I know that Grease You're the one that I want was not the best reality show out there. But, it had such a low rating because it had to do with theatre.

I think the sound of music could do really well on Broadway at the moment. I reckon with the right casting it would sell and with a show like "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?" I reckon it will fly :) I'd still really like to see Joanna Riding play Maria but it'll never happen re: 09/10 Broadway Season - The British Invasion??

I think that there are several problems with doing a casting reality show for The Sound of Music. Frist off is the problem of the people who watch them. Believe it or not America is full of people who are reality show junkies. They can't wait till they can watch a show and vote on who wins just for the sake of doing it. I can assure you that there were more people who watched and went online for the Grease reality show to vote then there were people who actually made the trip to NYC to see the winners post reality show.

Second of all, theatre is not at all popular in America the same way that it in the UK. There you have people like Paige and Ball who people know and have made their lives working on the stage. The same is not true for America.

I think that part of the problem is also the fact that it is hard to travel to NYC to see the winners of the reality show. Unlike living in England where you can drive five hours or so to London to see the show, in the US it costs amounts in the the thousands to get to NYC from anywhere else in the country.

I have heard great things about the Really Useful production of Sound Of Music, I just think that they would be more successful if they went to Broadway and ditched the reality show. But, that is just me.

"Sister Act is an american show which toured around the states, made a few changes then came to the UK"

The production that played America was not a tour, was different producers, and a completely different production entirely.
