Posted: 9/23/05 at 2:44pmI disagree. I think he and I are on the same page humor wise... that was hysterical.

Did you guys ever read the thing he posted somewhere about his daily schedule? It was hysterical -- he has a really bizarre sense of humor. In this interview in particular, I had a tough time telling what he meant as a joke and what he was serious about (like the Taboo Tony nomination part), but I thought it was pretty funny. Just odd.

Posted: 9/23/05 at 3:02pmI really don't see anything "assish" in the interview. He was kidding around, I think a couple jokes were hilarious and a few feel flat but he seemed to simply be having a good time with the whole thing.

Posted: 9/23/05 at 4:24pmWhether or not you think he's clever, saying he (and others) should shut their mouths, look pretty and sing is, in my opinion, obnoxious at best. If it was your attempt at wit, it went unrecognized. If it isn't, it's a horrible thing to say to any one, performer or not.

I WAS trying to be funny. Cary seems like a nice guy. But, way too many actors are so self-absorbed, they think their mouth sprouts gold. Seriously Craig, you can't tell me you've NEVER thought -- 'why don't you just sing or act, answer the question, and not discuss_________.' Cary's harmless--at least he's not giving an opinion on the Iraq War!

People really need to take a chill. The answers were purely tongue-in-cheek. I thought it was funny. Please people go to the market and pick yourselves up a bottle of happy pills....

2. Great buckets of Spoffnor, they're going to sing!
3. "I love shrubs that are historical." -Johnny and The Sprites
4. "We're not singing it to you, we're singing it for us." -Rosario Dawson, about La Vie Boheme
5. "The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours." -The History Boys
6. "Pass the parcel. That's sometimes all you can do. Take it, feel it and pass it on. Not for me, not for you, but for someone, somewhere, one day. Pass it on, boys. That's the game I want you to learn. Pass it on." -The History Boys

"But, way too many actors are so self-absorbed, they think their mouth sprouts gold. "
Based on our conversations, he's definitely not self-absorbed. And he certainly doesn't believe his words are golden. He just had fun with the questions instead of being dead on serious.
As for if I've ever thought "why don't you just sing or act, do your job, and not discuss_________." - I can honestly say NO. I just don't think that way. To each their own.
Cary certainly didn't discuss anything not pertinent to the questions asked. You didn't find his sense of humor amusing. That's cool. I respect that. I just objected to allusion that he's just a pretty face and voice.

Just another poster who thinks he's clever.
Just another actor who thinks he's clever (a la John Hill.) Why don't they just shut their mouths, look pretty and sing?
Then what's the point in doing an interview?
If you ever saw Cary in concert you would know that he's got a great sense of humor and never takes himself seriously. And that's a big reason his fanbase is strong and devoted. He's a genuinely nice guy who appreciates working and performing.

i think the reason that some of his responses fell flat was that this is a "canned" interview. in other words all of the questions are submitted in advance and the person being "interviewed" writes their answers.
these kind of interviews always come off as a bit disconnected because many times when interviewing someone an answer they give is so much more interesting and that leads to a whole new set of questions that the original interviewer did not intend.
in this case, rather than picking up on something cary said, the interview just continues. that's one reason why i don't like q&a interviews. it's an easy way to write a story but often does not have terribly good results as in this instance.
