#110 Plays
Posted: 9/6/09 at 2:07am

I don't mean to make another thread in this vein, or another thread with "10" in the title, but I figured musicals always get priority over straight plays, so why not?

1. Angels in America, Perestroika
2. Angels in America, Millennium Approaches
3. Hedda Gabler
4. A Streetcar Named Desire
5. Art
6. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
7. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
8. Mother Courage and her Children
9. Macbeth
10. A Doll's House

How did you hear about 7?
I'm certain it was referenced in some sitcom I watched incessantly, which led me to the film, which led me to the play.

Would 4 make a good movie?
It's a fabulous film already.

What's your favorite line from 10?
"Free. To be free, absolutely free"

Who's your favorite actor from any production of number 3?
Kate Burton was very good from what I remember, but I always wanted to see how Cate Blanchett approached the role.

How many times have you seen 9?
Once on Broadway, many times in film.

Who's your favorite character from 2?
Harper.

What sort of merchandise do you have from 5?
Just the book, and a Playbill courtesy of eBay.

Is 8 by your favorite playwright?
Alas, no, but a close second.

Do you have a copy of every play written by 1's playwright?
So far, yes.

Could you recite all of the dialogue and stage directions from 6 by memory?
No, not at the moment.

The first play you ever saw live (or that you at least remember)?
Hamlet, a High School production I saw while I was in middle school.

The first play you saw on Broadway?
Hedda Gabler.

The first play you saw off-Broadway?
The Castle. i should frequent Off-Broadway more often, though.

The play that got you into theatre?
Hamlet.

Your favorite playwright?
Tony Kushner or Tennessee Williams.

Your favorite play from your favorite playwright?
Angels in America.

Ever left a play at intermission?
Nope.

Your all-time favorite line of dialogue?
"In this world, there is a kind of painful progress. Longing for what we've left behind, and dreaming ahead."

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
Not really, no.

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a play- any time, any where, any cast. As long as it actually happened.
Angels at the Mark Taper Forum.

Your favorite 10 second clip from this year's Tonys?
God of Carnage.

Awesome! Let's have a bash at this! re: 10 Plays (Seriously, some days it feels like I'm the only person who likes plays; it's nice to be reminded I'm not! XD)

1. Henry V
2. The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?
3. The Woman in Black
4. War Horse
5. Arcadia
6. Angels in America
7. Journey's End
8. Hamlet
9. The Pillowman
10. Inherit the Wind

How did you hear about 7?
People talked about it a lot when it was on Broadway last. I eventually bought the script, and was blown away. Wish I'd seen it. re: 10 Plays

Would 4 make a good movie?
No. It's plot-lite and the beauty of it lies in the theatricality of it.

What's your favourite line from 10?
"Elijah. Yes. Why, I had no idea you were still around. I've read some of your stuff." <3 Hornbeck.

Who's your favourite actor from any production of number 3?
Oh. Um, I really couldn't choose. The material is stronger than any of the cast, and the casts I've seen have all been equal in brilliance.

How many times have you seen 9?
Once, in Leicester. It was disconcerting; Paul Ready made an excellent Michal, but he talked like the Moon from The Mighty Boosh. "When you are the moon, Katurian...". Then I saw Time and the Conways and it turns out that it's probably his real voice anyway, which is a little unfortunate for the poor lamb. XD

Who's your favourite character from 2?
Probably Martin. His genuineness and slight helplessness just endear him to me in spite of his proclivities.

What sort of merchandise do you have from 5?
The programme and the script. If anyone wants to release an audio CD of the current West End cast, I'd COMPLETELY buy it. I'd rather like a poster too...

Is 8 by your favorite playwright?
Gosh, yes. XD My favourite non-modern playwright anyway, and certainly my favourite English playwright. XD

Do you have a copy of every play written by 1's playwright?
Haha, yes. XD It's the big yellow one that the RSC released with Macmillan. Unfortunately, it's not very portable, so I'm gradually buying all the plays in paperback as Macmillan release them as well, so eventually I will have at least two copies of every play, and three copies of the ones I bought cheaply from Wordsworth because I didn't want to have to wait for the Macmillan release. XD

Could you recite all of the dialogue and stage directions from 6 by memory?
NO. XD

The first play you ever saw live (or that you at least remember)?
I don't remember anything before Romeo and Juliet while I was at school. All I remember is that Mercutio was teh sex, Benvolio had curly hair, and we saw Romeo's bum briefly in act 4. I became a regular independent theatre-goer in 2006, and the first thing I saw then was The Woman in Black. :3

The first play you saw on Broadway?
I've never seen any play on Broadway. I hope to remedy this next time I'm in New York. I've seen some plays that have transferred to and from Broadway though, most recently Hamlet (West End to Broadway) and August: Osage County (Broadway to West End).

The first play you saw off-Broadway?
Never seen anything off-Broadway. I guess my first off-West End play since I started counting was Metamorphosis at the Lyric Hammersmith. It was AWESOME. XD

The play that got you into theatre?
There wasn't really a play that got me into theatre. I was already into theatre before I realised plays could be interesting too. So I guess The Woman in Black counts as much as anything. If it had been dull, I may not have gone to as many more. I also credit Henry V with getting me into Shakespeare. It was literally a life-changing experience for me. XD

Your favourite playwright?
Non-modern: Shakespeare. Contemporary American: Edward Albee. Contemporary non-American: Martin McDonagh.

Your favourite play from your favourite playwright?
From Shakespeare, Henry V. From Albee, The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?. From McDonagh, The Pillowman.

Ever left a play at intermission?
Nope, although I wish I had when I saw England People Very Nice. It was pretty horrible and did not improve. D:

Your all-time favourite line of dialogue?
I don't know that I can choose. I have an exchange of dialogue that I love above all others though, if I may, from Henry IV part 1:
HOTSPUR If I mistake not, thou art Harry Monmouth.
PRINCE HENRY Thou speak'st as if I would deny my name.
HOTSPUR My name is Harry Percy.
PRINCE HENRY Why, then I see
A very valiant rebel of the name.
I am the Prince of Wales; and think not, Percy,
To share with me in glory any more:
Two stars keep not their motion in one sphere;
Nor can one England brook a double reign,
Of Harry Percy and the Prince of Wales.
HOTSPUR Nor shall it, Harry; for the hour is come
To end the one of us; and would to God
Thy name in arms were now as great as mine!
PRINCE HENRY I'll make it greater ere I part from thee;
And all the budding honours on thy crest
I'll crop, to make a garland for my head.
HOTSPUR I can no longer brook thy vanities.
They fight
The posturing... the insolence... the fight... no wonder this bit makes me more than a little swoony! :3 :3 :3

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
Only if I have a train to catch and I'm nervous about missing it. Or if I'm regretting not leaving at the interval. XD

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a play- any time, any where, any cast. As long as it actually happened.
2004, Hamlet at the RSC. Directed by Michael Boyd, fights by Terry King, Toby Stephens as Hamlet, Clive Wood as Claudius, Sian Thomas as Gertrude, Forbes Masson as Horatio, Greg Hicks as the Ghost, John Mackay as Rosencrantz! How could I NOT want to see this one more than anything else in the history of every play ever?! (If I'm going back to 2004 anyway, can I add on Journey's End at the Comedy Theatre? Geoffrey Streatfeild as Stanhope. <3 <3 <3) (Yes, I've considered the time travel question before, and yes, of all the history of the entire world, 2004 is where I'd go first. For theatre reasons. I'm Just That Hip.)

Your favourite 10 second clip from this year's Tonys?
Haha, nice question. XD I thought 33 Variations looked pretty interesting, and I'd like to see more. :)

Amadeus?

Extremities.

So many....I'm not sure if that ever remains constant!

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
I have never done so.

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a play- any time, any where, any cast. As long as it actually happened.
The original Lion in Winter featuring Rosemary Harris as Queen Eleanor and Robert Preston as King Henry II, James Rado as Richard the Lionhearted and Christopher Walken as his lover, King Philip of France.

Your favorite 10 second clip from this year's Tonys?
I was horrified by it all.
