I just received my copy of the book "Broadway Musicals: The 101 Greatest Shows of All Time," and I must say that it is a must-have for any Broadway buff.
For those of you who have read it, what are your comments about the shows selected (or those that weren't)? I was delightfully surprised that my favorite, "On the Twentieth Century," was among the selections. What I particularly liked about the book is that it includes pictures that haven't been published before, or at least haven't been published about a million times in other books.
Your comments please
Can someone list the 101 shows? Or at least tell me if Peter Pan was included?
Unfortunately I have not read this book....but how did Les Misérables, Hairspray, Avenue Q, Wicked, and Little Shop do?
*looks around hopefully*
"Peter Pan" and Les Miz" are in the book. The only musical of the present century listed is "The Full Monty."
I love this book, and it is very cheap (like 20 bucks I think), so completely worth the purchase. I have been intersted in Musical Thetre for years and years and a lot of these pictures are new to me. A Must Have!

It's a terrific, must-buy book (it was on sale for around $23 at Barnes & Noble last week) if for no other reason, the photographs are absolutely incredible. They spent years digging through vaults and archives to unearth some of them that have never been published before. Absolutely beautiful. They also have dozens of great mini-bios and capsule summaries of a who's who of performers, directors, choregraphers, designers et al crucial to the development of the musical theatre in the last 100 years.
One can most certainly quibble about some of the inclusions (too many early operettas and second and third-tier shows from 40s - 60s) and omissions (several outrageous ones), but the book is certainly worth owning for the price for what IS included here and for the text and amazing photographs.
But Margo, surely they didn't overlook Starlight Express!

Perhaps the most outrageous omission of them all.......

Well, there are three pages of full color photographs of Jennifer Love-Hewitt.

What were some of the shows listed in this book? What year did it go up to?
All the usual suspects are in the book...The book features 101 musicals and pictures from flops, etc. Most of the show choices are standards but the pics and comments are unique.

THe "newest" show is The Full Monty (it doesn't include The Producers). I seem to remember Ragtime, Rent, City of Angels, and, I think, Kiss of the Spiderwoman from the 90s. The list is on BWW somewhere...
I just love my copy. I'm stetching out my enjoyment of it--I read about one or two shows before going to sleep each night. It's a brief, wonderful way to end the day.
I'm pretty sure that all those shows are in there Margo. I remember seeing them in a little subsection.
(I wil now do what I am apparently supposed to do):
Well, as long as SWEENEY is in there...

that's cool--I'll try to pick it up sometime soon.
Oh Margo! You truly made me LOL. Priceless!
I thumbed through the book when killing time at Marshall Field's and the photos alone seem worth the price. Maybe Santa will see I've been a very good boy.....
I put it on my Christmas list. It was at Costco and I was looking through it and almost peed in excitement at the picture of George Hearn in a dress. Spicy!
