Substance.
The keyword here is substance. Oh and a seasoned writer with one Tony under his belt.

And that means everything...............
?
lol
re: '13' 'Glory Days'#4
Posted: 5/9/08 at 12:51pmMore so than a show with one regional performance, written by two first time writers, with a subpar score, and stagnant story line. Plus the tween market is a lot bigger than the Teen market when it comes to Broadway.
re: '13' 'Glory Days'#5
Posted: 5/9/08 at 12:52pmSo after a rock musical flops on Broadway, no other rock musicals should be tried? After a Disney musical flops on Broadway, no other Disney musical should be brought to Broadway? What a weird, nonsensical, unfounded attitude. Also, Glory Days wasn't EVEN a 'teen' musical as the characters, creators, and actors are in their 20's.

I think he means that the show was aimed at teen audiences.

Okay, well I took the comment as intending to mean 'teen musical' = about teens--- Bye Bye Birdie, Fame, Grease... Not 'teen musical', like is seeking teens as a target demographic--- Rent, Wild Party, Last 5 Years...
No matter which one you meant, there are successful musicals that can fall into both categories. Obviously, Spring Awakening is the best recent example, but there are others. And you have no idea what audience the 13 marketing is going to target... after all, Billy Elliot is based around 13ish year olds, and they won't court the teen audience aggressively, in my opinion.
Critics and audiences responding to 13 will probably not be swayed by their own views of Glory Days. In 1971, when Follies and 70 Girls 70, two musical involving 'old people', which is somewhat rare, opened within TWO WEEKS of each other, this didn't seem to have much affect on critical or popular opinion of either show. I think the same dynamic will be true in the case you're referring to. Did the level of success of Legally Blonde affect Glory Days? No, I don't think so.

yeah, cause I can't think of many musicals entirely created and produced by teens outside of Judy and Mickey's barn shows.
I do think many producers are trying to create the cultish fan bases of shows like RENT, WICKED and now SPRING AWAKENING--cults which are primarily composed of teens and college students--which is why we have things like GLORY DAYS, 13 and the like.
They're actually quite smart in doing this knowing that teens are much more likely to go see a show they can envision performing in themselves--which is why many of my friends see shows time and again.
re: '13' 'Glory Days'#9
Posted: 5/9/08 at 1:20pmBut they didn't because Glory days had absolutely no advance whatsoever, as the producers admitted

'13' isn't aimed just for teens. there are many themes and characters an older audience member can relate to... unlike GLORY DAYS.
also. even if the score isn't "all that", it's a Jason Robert Brown score. I can't imagine it being worse than the terrible trash called GLORY HOLES.

"But they didn't because Glory days had absolutely no advance whatsoever, as the producers admitted "
My "they" didn't really refer to the producers of GLORY DAYS alone, but rather the current fad of youth-oriented shows.

Posted: 5/9/08 at 3:33pmOff topic, but the kids in "13" are driving the Goodspeed staff CRAZY!!! I live in the area, and the kids are trashing the housing and giving the poor old folks at Goodspeed a run for their money. Quite funny, actually.

Posted: 5/9/08 at 3:44pmThis is a bit of a threadjack, but Frenzy, Wild Party seeking teens? I really don't think that was either version's target audience.
re: '13' 'Glory Days'#14
Posted: 5/9/08 at 3:49pmThe Lippa version has carved out a fan base made of young people, perhaps because of its 'hip' themes/ popular-to-teens cast. Maybe this has happened more, post- NYC production, but I remember hearing of many teens and young people flocking to MTC.

Speaking of 13. It will be playing at the Norma Terris Theater in Chester, CT (which is 10 mins away from East Haddam ) not in East Haddam which is the real location of Goodspeed Theater.
I posted a thread about car-pooling to the show (for posters from Boston & CT)

I am thinking of seeing a matinee show on weekends. Still no date.

Posted: 5/9/08 at 3:51pmI feel like it's probably more post MTC. But you're definitely right about the popular-to-teens cast. I wouldn't exactly call some of the fans real fans though if all they listen to is Life of the Party.

"the kids in "13" are driving the Goodspeed staff CRAZY"
god, can you imagine? A bunch of hyperactive teens who crave attention and have yet to develop a personality living together and feeding off each other's neuroses?

re: '13' 'Glory Days'#19
Posted: 5/9/08 at 4:19pmI'm sure most shows aren't intentionally aimed at teens, even the ones that draw a large teen audience (Wicked, etc.) Also, I think Glory Days was aimed at 20-somethings who have already gone through those same experiences. Just a thought, though I don't know too much about marketing.

Posted: 5/9/08 at 5:09pmYes as lildogs meant a show aimed at teen audiences, not a teen show. Frenzy you should uh I don't know read the post, not freak out when the word teen is mentioned.

I think they're all "around" 13 jay, not all 13 exactly...
"I'm sure most shows aren't intentionally aimed at teens"
No, MOST shows aren't--but MY point at least was that producers want to replicate the teen fan base that a show like WICKED has...and they seek shows to fill that demographic--family friendly fare. Most Bway tickets are bought by tourists and a great of those tourists are families looking to see something together.

Here's the complete cast of 13 & creative team

FYI- Tom Kitt (composer of N2N) is conducting the show and playing the keyboard.
Soo excited! I wish I can meet JRB & Tom Kitt after the show!

I got email from Goodspeed regarding 13....and they must be worried that people wont want to see it, since every other sentence is "NOT JUST FOR KIDS" or "ALL AGES WILL ENJOY THIS"
I can't think of anything I'd want to see less. Oh wait...yes I can.
