Invocation and instructions to the audience from frogs is great, also anything from assassins is enjoyable if you dont mind the language. pirrellis miracle elixir from sweeney is good. glamourous life from a little night music. those are the ones off the top of my head, he has written such beauty that it is had to name the best
West side story, period
Into the woods period
(No one is alone)
Side by side by sondheim probably pretty much sums up some of his greatest works.

He didn't write the music for West Side Story (and personally is not crazy about the lyrics he wrote for it).

side by side was a review show and only had sondheim up to pacific overtures, you have to admit he has written amazing things after that
EVERYTHING from Into the Woods
If you want to go with anything he's worked on, West Side Story and Gypsy are my two favorite musicals.
Johanna- Sweeney Todd
Green Finch and Linnet Bird- Sweeney Todd
A Weekend in the Country- A Little Night Music
You Could Drive a Person Crazy- Company
There Won't be Trumpets- Anyone Can Whistle
Not Getting Married Today- Company

Gosh, I blanked on Broadway Baby from Follies.
Thanks dramaqueen.
edit: Its not from a musical, but I love "Sooner or Later" from Dick Tracy.
I think it's funny people took brdlawyr seriously. :)
My personal favorite is the Prologue for Into the Woods. Or Children Will Listen. Both are fine pieces.
