He didn't write the music to Gypsy -- Jules Styne did.

Invocation and instructions to the audience from frogs is great, also anything from assassins is enjoyable if you dont mind the language. pirrellis miracle elixir from sweeney is good. glamourous life from a little night music. those are the ones off the top of my head, he has written such beauty that it is had to name the best

West side story, period
Into the woods period
(No one is alone)
Side by side by sondheim probably pretty much sums up some of his greatest works.

He didn't write the music for West Side Story (and personally is not crazy about the lyrics he wrote for it).

EVERYTHING from Into the Woods

If you want to go with anything he's worked on, West Side Story and Gypsy are my two favorite musicals.

Johanna- Sweeney Todd
Green Finch and Linnet Bird- Sweeney Todd
A Weekend in the Country- A Little Night Music
You Could Drive a Person Crazy- Company
There Won't be Trumpets- Anyone Can Whistle
Not Getting Married Today- Company

I think it's funny people took brdlawyr seriously. :)

My personal favorite is the Prologue for Into the Woods. Or Children Will Listen. Both are fine pieces.

Here are some ones that aren't, I woulds say his 15 BEST, but are great and would probably be slighted otherwise:

-Free (... Forum)
-Barcelona (Company)
-I'm Still Here (Follies)
-Could I Leave You? (Follies)
-You Must Meet My Wife (Night Music)
-Send in the Clowns (Night Music; come on - you're not allowed to have a Sondheim compilation without it!)
-Someone in a Tree (Pacific Overtures)
-Poems (Pacific Overtures)
-Pretty Women (Sweeney)
-A Little Priest (Sweeney; see "Send in the Clowns")
-Not While I'm Around (Sweeney)
-Not a Day Goes By (Merrily ...)
-Finishing the Hat (Sunday ... w/George; see "Send in the Clowns)
-Sunday (Sunday ... w/ George)
-The Gun Song/Ballad of Czolgosz (Assassins; it's set up like that on the Original Cast Recording & has Terrance Mann!)

"Who is Stephen Sondheim?" -roninjoey
"The man who wishes he had written Phantom of the Opera!" - SueleenGay
