The performance that really struck me this year was Cherry Jones in "Faith Healer."

Diana DeGarmo in Hairspray. What a revelation that girl has been. I hope she is able to land another role in 2007.

You all do know that Jersey Boys, Sweeney Todd and The Color Purple all opened in 2005, right?

The thing that bugs me about threads like this, or any thread that singles out an aspect of a show, is that people simply pick their favorite shows and write them down regardless.

The great performances I've seen this year are John Gallagher Jr in SA & Mary Louise Wilson in GG. Ebersole goes without saying, but I really feel Wilson's portrayal is the more consistent of the two. In a good way.

I wish there was a "really damn good but not quite great" performances thread. I'd have tons of people to post there.

Oh! Also: Edward Hibbert in Curtains. FANTASTIC.

2006 BROADWAY PRODUCTIONS, for now:

Harry Connick, Jr. as Sid in The Pajama Game
Christine Ebersole as "Little" Edie/Edith in Grey Gardens
John Gallagher, Jr. as Moritz in Spring Awakening
Alexander Gemignani as Valjean in Les Misérables
Jonathan Groff as Melchior in Spring Awakening
Jerzy Gwiazdowsky as Davey in The Lieutenant of Inishmore
Jay Johnson as Jay/others in Jay Johnson: The Two and Only
Judy Kaye as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd
Beth Leavel as The Drowsy Chaperone in The Drowsy Chaperone
Bill Nighy as Oliver in The Vertical Hour
Alison Pill as Mairead in The Lieutenant of Inishmore
Martin Short as Martin/others in Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me
Jason Tam as Paul in A Chorus Line
Julie White as Diane in The Little Dog Laughed
The ensemble of Awake and Sing!
The ensemble of The History Boys

And I haven't seen (to my dismay) Company and any part of The Coast of Utopia trilogy, among others.

My thoughts, exactly. That's why it's only Judy Kaye I can include for Sweeney Todd. At least, in my opinion.

Is anyone else pained to see THe Grinch and Stephen Lynch on the same list as Christine Ebersole...or without Christine Ebersole?

Being jeremiah- doesn't Harry Connick Jr for The Pajama Game also count for 2005 or am I forgetting my dates?

And a lot more people like The Wedding Singer than I thought. I can't say much, the only shows I saw in 2006 were Of Thee I Sing, Guys and Dolls in London, and Les Mis. And we all know I'm gonna say Aaron Lazar for Les Mis and Ewan McGregor for Guys and Dolls.

So why Wedding singer? I have to know - I never saw it but I don't like the CD at all.

"It's a great feeling of power to be naked in front of people. We're happy to watch actual incredible graphic violence and gore, but as soon as somebody's naked it seems like the public goes a bit bananas about the whole thing."
