saw a workshop of KITTY GENOVESE. it is one of the most stunning pieces of musical theatre i have ever seen. the score is so fluid and really creates an incredible world in which the characters live. it is so smart and thought-provoking and jarring, yet beautiful at the same time. i cannot praise it enough. it is earth shatteringly good, and the cast is phenomenal!
CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT!!!

Saw Have A Nice Life this afternoon. (Sat behind Mr. Sondheim, thank you very much).
The show was fantastic--smart/funny lyrics, complex and beautiful score. The cast was superb: Emily Skinner was as wonderful as you would expect, yet in NO way did she out-shine the rest of the cast--there really wasn't a weak link in the chain, IMO.
Oops--I just checked the schedule to post the remaining dates, but today appears to have been the final performance.
nevermind....

Posted: 9/18/06 at 2:18amof the 6 shows I've seen so far, Have a Nice Life is the most likely to be picked up for a commercial run (which I would LOVE) followed not too far behind by Having It Almost

Zoneace: The description of Having It Almost suggests that the two shows are very much cut from the same strangers-sharing-their-stories" cloth.
Are the two shows similar in feeling?

In the sense of them being "strangers sharing their stories" shows, yes. But mortivations behind them are very much different. Their target audiences are also quite different. Having It Almost would be most well received by women over the age of 35, while Have a Nice life has a much wider appeal. HaNL is also much tighter, and has a better score.
I really couldn't find any thing negative to say about HaNL (except maybe that i wish it had been longer so that the enjoyment could have lasted longer than 90 minutes). But with Having it Almost the original motivation for the action seems almost non-existant. I was able, for the most part, to get past that, but was this nagging pinch at the back of my mind that the reason these 5 women started talking was manufactured.
Than said, they are still the 2 best shows I've seen so far (that includes Kingdom, Oedipus for Kids, Lunch and The Children).

I'm seeing Lunch and Oedipus this week, but HaNL is--by far--the most enjoyable NYMF show I've seen in 3 years. The talent of the cast just blew me away, especially Michelle Blakely (Amy) and Nikki Selson (Barbara).
In this deadly climate of star-driven revivals and juke-box crap, a new show bursting with so much potential is just exhilarating.
I see in the program that there is an "Evening of Music by Conor Mitchell" at the Daryl Roth theatre on Monday 9/25. I'll be there for sure.
