Some of my favorite things of the year.
THE NORMAL HEART
BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO
GOOD PEOPLE
Jane Houdyshel in FOLLIES....character actors can bring something special to a show and that something has become underappreciated of late.
Laura Benanti in WOMEN ON THE VERGE.
Frances McDormand in GOOD PEOPLE....and her Tony outfit.
Brian Bedford in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST.
THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS being remembered with TONY nominations.
QUEEN OF THE MIST......devastating show that I am so glad I got to see.
I saw Sons of the Prophet today and it was the worst thing I've seen all year and I've seen a lot of shows this year. If I wasn't stuck in the middle of the row I think this show would have been the first one I've ever left. Just painful to sit through.

- I love and miss Catch Me If You Can
- I think The Scottsboro Boys deserved to win a Tony award
- Did not like Lysistrata Jones
- I enjoyed How to Succeed more than Anything Goes
- I waited 8 hours for Book of Mormon SRO tickets TWICE and they were totally worth it
I found Jan Maxwell to be highly over-rated and weak in Follies.
I actually enjoyed On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, with the exception of the Set/Costumes/Harry Connick Jr.
I loved every second of Beth Leavel's scenery chewing performance in Baby, It's You.
I wished I never would have taken my sister up on her free ticket to Addams Family.
After The Normal Heart, Sons of the Prophet was the best thing I saw all year.

She struggled at first, but I think Elaine Paige is now one of the best things about Follies.

I thought THE NORMAL HEART was fine. Nothing more.
JERUSALEM destroyed me. I wept like an infant.
I hated 75% of the FOLLIES revival.
Off the top of my head, here's how I rank the productions I saw in 2011 (at least the ones that I can remember):
1. Cabaret (Dallas Theatre Center)
2. Ghost (London)
3. Oklahoma! (Arena Stages)
4. Catch Me If You Can
5. How to Succeed....
5b. Next to Normal (national tour)
6. The Mountaintop
7. Sweeney Todd (in Chicago)
8. Porgy and Bess
8b. Follies
9. Book of Mormon
10. West Side Story (national tour)
11. Betty Blue Eyes (London)
12. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
13. Bonnie and Clyde
14. The Wiz (Dallas Theatre Center)
15. That Championship Season
16. Sunset Blvd (Signature Theatre)
17. Guys and Dolls (national tour)
18. 9 to 5 (national tour)
Oops, forgot Hair (national tour). Put that between Book of Mormon and West Side Story!

Priscilla Queen of the Desert is the most fun I have had at any show on Broadway, and probably my favorite show on Broadway right now.

1. I adore Sister Act. I have never clapped or smiled harder at any other show. Practically floated on air out of the theatre.
2. It's been nearly one year and I still laugh out loud when I think about H2$'s "Grand Old Ivy."
3. I will never forget my experience seeing HAIR "Summer of Love."
4. I don't understand all of the hate surrounding Godspell.
5. Wonderland is the only show I have ever despised.

I had the pleasure of 4 broadway shows in 2011: Catch Me If You Can, Book of Mormon, American Idiot and Anything Goes.
Catch me if you can was by far the best show of 2011 in my opinion. I rank my enjoyment of that show up there with seeing Sweeney in 05, OBC Spring Awakening in 06 and Lupone Gypsy in 08. The show closed way too early and I will never understand why it was not a hit. The cast was phenominal, the score was consistent with some wonderful songs and the choreo was great fun.
That being said, by far the best show I saw in 2011 was a non equity regional production of Passing Strange done by Bailiwick Chicago.
I think Edie Falco's nuances were leagues better than Ellen Barkin's screaming rant and Falco deserved the Tony.
I think Mandy and Patti was a steaming turd and critics praised it as a chance to feel superior to the uneducated masses.
I think Matt Risch is incredibly talented but gets written off for being so good looking and for shacking up with the boss.
I think Sons of the Prophet is better than Other Desert Cities.
I think Danny Burstein should win the Tony. Hands down.
