Whenever any show broadcasts anything from their respective theatres, audience in attendance is fully aware and there is a tech rehearsal done in advance with preparation. It’s not like they just switch on the cameras during an actual live performance. Audience has been rehearsed and the sequence being telecast live has been camera blocked in advance.

Well I guess that depends what the 'whole point' is - if the whole point is to showcase musicals in the best possible light to hopefully sell tickets I would suggest a pre-record from the theatre actually sounds like a good idea! Every year we always complain that the performances don't always reflect well on the show. Maybe it's not going to be fun for the Tony audience, but I'd be keen for them to try something different. Just needs to be pulled off in a way that still makes it all feel real and not canned (f that's even possible).
