Not to mention that area is heavily Puerto Rican. So it will def be a busy day in Washington Heights!
If it was built as a movie house I wonder if the backstage can handle a production like this! But I assume they’ve thought about all that.

Good for her.
I’ll never forget her pointing me out in that Radio City crowd last year.

Loved her last year and I'm sure she's gonna do a great job again!

She really needs to fire her entire team that's advising on these decisions. She has completely squandered her Oscar win and cheapened her brand with these hosting gigs. Maybe she's happy to just be a theater person who had a single breakthrough film performance and then faded away from the public consciousness (ie non-theater people), but from a career trajectory she is in a really bad place right now. Compare her to Rachel Zegler who wasn't even initially invited to the Oscars but has leveraged WSS for numerous major film roles.

Do you really think Ariana is only hosting award ceremonies? She currently has 5 films that are all in post production. She’s been working! She’s just in that weird spot where not all of her projects are out yet, but that doesn’t mean that she hasn’t leveraged her Oscar win for major parts. She’s the lead, or at least co-lead performer for 3 of those movies.
I wish variety programs were more popular, she would be an amazing host for one.

Not an Ariana fan, but this isn’t fair to say just yet. COVID screwed up the release schedules, impacting the West Side Story cast breakouts. We won’t be seeing most of their new work for another few months.

Agreed but she's getting overexposed in this space. They should've passed on the Tonys this year.
"Squandered" her Oscar win? Lol please.
Her Oscar win is WHY she was sought out to host the Tonys. She also currently stars in Schmigadoon. She's voicing a main character in an upcoming Disney animated film. She will be in the Spider-Man universe with a major role in the upcoming Kraven movie. And has about 6 other movies in various forms of production. How is her moment "squandered?" And how do you know what brings her joy and fulfillment? Some of y'all really out here just saying words
So, what's the reason for holding the TONYS at the United Palace this year and not at RCMH? RCMH is not booked for Sunday 6/11!

I’m guessing money and space - they didn’t sell many public tickets last year ( they overcharge IMO) . And I’m sure RCMH is much more expensive. I do think it’s a logistical nightmare - it’s so much closer to the theater district and there’s a lot of running back and forth for the performers.

So will most of the nominated shows take the afternoon off?

Its safe to assume so. The schlep from midtown to Washington Heights is a doozy on subway and in a car it’s worse. Casts and crews of performing shows are going to be exhausted that week of rehearsals commuting uptown then to midtown preparing for the Tony Awards AND still keeping their performance schedule going as well.
Yeah SUCH a doozy to ride the A express line that gets you from 59th to 125th in minutes. Such a SCHLEP. Lolz. Get a life.

I don't know when these events were booked (before or after the date for the Tonys was set), but there are things booked during the week before, including Friday, June 9th. That would make for a very fast load in and tech for the telecast.

No idea what the shows will be doing re matinees on Tony day but are you suggesting that the casts of these shows would be doing their makeup, getting dressed, and then schlepping uptown on the A train?! Talk about Lolz.

So nice to see that some things never change -- and that you remain insufferable (and wrong --- let me know when you see Jessica Chastain and Victoria Clark and Ben Platt and Laura Linney on the A train while applying their makeup)! LOLZZZ!!!
I reckon a decent number of the performers in these shows live in the Heights and Inwood anyway.’

sure- but the majority don't, and the suggestion was that black tie clad Bway performers would be hustling up/down the steps to hop the A train in heels, cummerbunds and makeup. Quite a hilarious image.

Yes, a logistical nightmare having to travel to that neighborhood which is not great along with the PR day parade that hood will be ugh crazy! I wonder if they realized that when deciiding on hosting it all the way up there? Gorgeous venue though. I noticed that most shows have scheduled their matinee to 2:00 (Shucked 1:00) on Tony Sunday but New York New York, SLIH, Kimberly Akimbo - no show. I would love to know the real reason why they chose the United Palace and not continue at the usual home of the TONYS-RCMH or even find a venue in the Broadway vicinity? Usually, casts in shows just walk over to RCMH after the matinee on Tony Sunday. Not going to be fun traveling for all this year. Imagine if it rains? Ariana we love her and she'll be great again!!!

Most performing casts get transportation to and from the venue - that was true even when they only had to travel a few blocks from their theater to RCMH.

The day of the Tonys is thrilling and exhausting.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Mayor's office helped facilitate the venue change and will offer to clear a route from the theatre district to the United Palace. There is no room for casts in costume/makeup sitting in a bus in gridlock traffic on the big day. The schedule is something like this:
6:30/7am - wigs, costume, makeup at the individual show's theatre
7:30am - bus to Tony venue
8am - Tony dress rehearsal
11am - bus back to theatre
1pm, 2pm or 3pm - Matinee
6:30pm - wigs, costume, makeup at the individual show's theatre
7:30pm-9:30pm - bus to Tony venue depending on performance time
8pm - Tony telecast
After performance - Bus back to theatre
I would be shocked if the producers of the show just hoped for the best regarding traffic on a Sunday in June.

I heard a rumor they might pre-record the numbers in their respective theaters then run clips during the Tonys but it seems to defeat the whole point.
Out of curiosity:
If any show were to perform their Act One (or Act Two) finale from their respective theater, is it possible for them to black out at the end like any other performance? I imagine the telecast would show about 10 seconds of the blackout so we can hear some of the applause, and then it cuts right to commercial. Then, after a few ads, we hear the announcer say something like: "Coming up, [name], [name], [name], and performances by [show] and [show], when the Tony Awards return." The broadcast would then come back after a few more ads.
