Does anyone else find it extraordinary that Wicked appears above West Side Story in the 30 Greatest Musical list that has been posted on this message board?
I realise of course the derivative nature of West Side Story but in musical terms I cannot think of another show that comes close; combine this with the fact that it is the greatest love story ever told and you have the most potent integration of sound and story.
Yeh, but is West Side Story a GOOD musical, it was ok, but I can definitely think of ALOT better from the last 30 years, same with Wicked, it is a theatre phenomenon, but it is definitely not the best of the last 30 years (That title belongs to Rent Remixed..... yes I did vote for it!)
Am I complaining? Well yes I suppose I am....and I have thought about it. It does me no good to be so anti democratic but I am doing my bit to argue the case that new shows like Wicked have a novelty advantge in votes.
Just think...the last TV poll had Grease as the greatest musical ever. Do we take that lying down?
I think it is obvious it was the fan girls that made that win, but this site IS NOT full of them, so, people on BBW.COM what would you say is the best musical of the last 30 years?
Theatre is so driven by opinion, that trying to compile a list of the best is pretty pointless. No matter who comes in the top 10 people will always disagree, because we each have different taste and expectations, which is a good thing. If we all liked the same thing, they'd only be one play or musical running in the west end, and how ****e would that be!

Completely agree, but it still think its ok and good for people to share there favourite shows and reasons, it might inspire someone to go see a show they would not have seen before!
I do think it was a show which you had to see a few times to fully appreciate it, infact, the first time i saw it... i HATED it and was tempted to try and get a refund as my ticket simply said "Rent" and i still think to this day, it is anything but "Rent"!
I just found it a fun show, where you could leave your brain at the door, sit back and relax for a few hours, I know that whenever I saw it, i left with a smile, no matter what else had happened that day! And to me, that makes it a good show, and worthy of my favourite musical as no other has that effect (Except Wicked.... but that takes thought for me!)
Well, i didnt think of it as "rent" i thought of it as a whole new show, and i liked the direction and set! And it may be because I'm a young student, but i loved the style of music!
