Throughly enjoyed this play, the staging is exquisite and the acting ensemble perfection. Jane Fonda nails it - and indeed it is a thrill seeing a screen (and theater living legend live) but its the sheer beauty of the show, the staging, the acting and the amazing set design that combine to make for a fantatstic evening of theater.
Greg Keller was exceptionally strong as Mike - so was Samantha Mathis as Jane Fonda's daughter (there was a part of me that reminded me of On Golden Pond with the dynamic between Fonda and Mathis...) There is a scene in the second act where Zach Grenier gives a tour-de-force...and I know LITERALLY NOTHING about clasical music - you dont need to know anything about classical music btw to enjoy.
Funny, Often-Moving, Interesting and a geniune theatrical experience...Go see it.
I had seen the first act of the show in NYC and because my friend dozed off in the first act (his own doing) I never got to see the second act...Must admit, I ENJOYED this so much more in LA
Saw it opening night.
I agree 100%! I loved it!
And when it was over, I had no idea that 2:45 minutes had flown by.
Zach Grenier is unbelievable in this piece. As much as I liked Roger Robinson in JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE, Zach was robbed of the Tony that year.
I saw it in NYC and loved it :). Totally agree about Zach Grenier and the set was awesome on Broadway; can't wait to see what they've done to it at the Ahmanson when I go on the last day, March 6th.
And this review explains why Jane Fonda isn't the main reason to see "33 Variations". It's just GR8 theatre at its best!
