39 Steps.

The thrills ? and laughter ? of Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps will end on Broadway Jan. 10, 2010, the producers announced Sept. 21.

The Tony Award-winning staging at the Helen Hayes Theatre will, by closing, have run a total of 771 performances at three theatres. It's being called the longest-running Broadway play in seven years.

In the time I have been hanging out on BroadwayWorld I have never known this play to be talked about, being such a successful production that has done very well in London and New York and going on tour in the USA, just wondering what you thought about this show?

re: 39 Steps.

I didnt care for it really. It took a classic thriller that i love and turned it into farce...that wasnt that funny. Yes the staging is clever, but its been done before. The audience was all over 60 american tourists when i went.

It lost its footing after 20/30 minutes with me. A one trick show that is purely for the tourists me thinks!

I went on the strength of the rave reviews but was underwhelmed when I saw it.

I don't get why it won the Olivier for best comedy, but I was still amused through the entire show here in London. I suspect that it's on fire on good nights, but easily goes slack on bad.

I loved it when I saw it, mainly because it was different to anything I'd seen before and the cast was amazing.

It's a good play and I imagine it's very cheap to run with only four actors although I'm surprised it lasted so long on Broadway. I think the London production will be around for a few more years at least.

re: 39 Steps.

I think that for a long while it was playing at The Court Theatre, which is not a theatre one sees easily from the main drag of Broadway. With that being said, I think that there were a lot of people who didn't know it was around after playing the American Airlines Theatre on 42nd. It was making money and enough to move when You're Welcome America wanted the Court to move to The Helen Hayes.

It is very close to recouping but only time will tell if it does so before it closes. I saw it and I loved it very much. Very different from what I have seen before and I will see it again before it's time on Broadway is done.
