I will be in NY May 27-29 on a business trip. I thinkI will have Wednesday night free to grab dinner and see a show. I (sadly) have not been to Manhattan before, so I'm looking for advice and suggestions. I will be working and staying right near Times Square, but I desperately want to avoid any tourist trap restaurants.
I am leaning toward seeing A Gentleman's Guide... but a number of shows are calling my name (Fun Home, Beautiful, On The Twentieth Century, On the Town, It's Only a Play).
I am looking for:
- your suggestion for what I should see, as well as any tips you may have regarding seating / ticket buying for that show. I don't mind splurging on great seats as I'm just seeing one show, but I still want to get a good deal if at all possible.
- your suggestion for dinner. I am a VERY adventurous eater, so throw your best suggestions at me. The rest of my meals will be work meals, so I want to go some place great on my one free night. If you make a suggestion, can you please let me know if its walkable from Times Square or if I should take a cab or the subway?
Thanks!

Something Rotten! is a show not to be missed!!
The only show on your list that I would suggest crossing off is It's Only a Play. It's barely 'meh'.
From your list, my personal favorites are Gentleman' Guide and Fun Home.
It really depends, however, on your personal taste. Tell us some of your favorite and least favorite shows....that could help us guide you.
I can't imagine anyone disliking Fun Home, honestly. Besides a few crazies of course. ![]()

Yeah, It's Only a Play was pretty far down my potential list, I appreciate your advice on that one.
Some of my Favorite Shows: 1776, Les Miz, Into the Woods, Assassins, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Sweeney Todd, Once, Next to Normal, Rent, South Pacific, La Cage aux Falles (kind of a mixed bag... living in the Midwest I get most of my Broadway fix from On Broadway on XM radio)
Least Favorite: West Side Story and The King and I (don't throw eggs at me!... maybe this should go in the Unpopular Opinions thread haha)

The fact that you list Next to Normal as one of your favorite shows only makes me go to recommend Fun Home even more. :)
Of the shows you mention, I've only seen Fun Home, Gentleman's Guide and On The Town (so far!) I loved all of them. On the Town is a wonderful revival of a Broadway classic and is just a great, fun night at the theater. It has a great full orchestra which is something you don't get much these days. The show is full of dance including some rather long ballet sequences, so you can think about whether that's a plus or a minus for you.
GGLAM is funny and quirky and seeing Jefferson Mays play all of those characters is really an experience. I loved the music for this one.
Fun Home is just unlike anything else I've seen and I think I might tell you to pick that, just because it's really kind of a breakthrough show for Broadway and it's always exciting to see something new and different. Michael Cerveris's performance is one that you can't forget, too. And the music is gorgeous.
It's such a great season I really don't think you can go wrong!
Are you familiar with Broadwaybox.com? I often use them for discount tickets. Totally legit (you go through Telecharge) and you can pick your seats.
I'm afraid I don't have much to offer regarding restaurant options, except to say DON'T go to Guy's American Kitchen - it's awful.
I agree with the previous posters in recommending "Fun Home". Playbill has a discount code that is good for the dates you are here. Enjoy!
Based on your preferences, I'd push for Fun Home as well. A beautiful and heartfelt show.

Cannot recommend what others are saying you should see since I have not seen them.
Toloache for dinner. http://toloachenyc.com/media/toloache.html
Gentleman's Guide for the show. But only sit downstairs (anywhere) in the orchestra, upper levels are too high. They even make a joke about them in the song, I Don't Understand The Poor.

A poster above basically called people crazy if they did not like Fun Home. A bit harsh I must say. Saying someone is crazy if they do not like a show you did is a bit much. Everyone has different tastes.
A neighbor of ours who sees everything saw Fun. While he enjoyed it , he is mystified why it is receiving accolades indicating it is the best show ever etc etc. He enjoyed it but did not share in the universal hosannas it is getting.

Which I think is exactly what you said when Ben Brantley didn't like ROCKY, that you disagreed with him but you still respected him cause everyone has different tastes, right? I won't even mention all the times you have dropped "well, many people disagree with you" when someone here doesn't like a show you liked.
