Just got an email from 8coupons saying there are $8 tix for today's performance of Toxic Avenger.
I've been wanting to see this, but I have rehearsal. Boooo.

yeah, I thought it was more than worth my $25. The show is great, and the production values are very good for an off-Broadway show.
How do you get the $8 tickets? Just show up and ask, or do you have to show them the text like with "Rooms?"

TOTALLY WORTH IT!
Absolutely hysterical show.
Nancy Opel is a comic genius. If you never got to see her brilliant performance as Miss Pennywise in URINETOWN, you can redeem yourself with her wacky creation in TOXIE. She is truly one of a kind.
The score is also a blast. Along with top notch costumes and scenic design.

Posted: 8/14/09 at 12:42amYes RentBoy. The score to 9 to 5 is catchy, and the performers are talented. I enjoyed the women of Toxic Avenger, but thought the men (especially Matthew Saldivar) were terrible. Also, I found the direction atrocious. Interestingly enough, I saw Click Clack Moo today, which John Rando also directed, and found it to be better directed than Toxic...and it's a children's show.

Posted: 8/14/09 at 12:44amWhy didn't you like the direction? I mean, I'm not someone who usually notices if something is well directed or badly directed, but I thought it used the space well. And I think the songs are hella catchy, whereas the only part of 9 to 5 I liked was the underscoring in the hospital scene, which I wished was a song.

I remembered the melodies to most of the 9 to 5 songs as I left the theatre. The only thing I can remember from Toxic is "Bitch Liar Slut Whore" (which I enjoyed thoroughly), but other than that the music was in one ear and out the other.
As for the direction, I wish I could point to specific examples right now, but I haven't seen the show in over a month and don't remember exact times when I thought the direction was poor. I know I hated the entire sequence at the end when the mayor was chasing Toxie. It just felt like it had all been done before. I felt like he was going for cheap tricks that can all be found in Directing for Dummies. And a lot of the time, his idea of direction was "Stand there and throw things! Now growl!" Nothing spectacular.
