"Interesting idea, but that would be confusing as hell. What if me and another person were double casted as Mark, how would we know which one would play it? "
Only one character, Judy, is mentioned by name. Just give everyone a different call number. But how do you do this night-in and night-out? Unless a dancer is having an off night, wouldn't the same people be picked each night?

Going off of what's been said earlier, I really DO wonder how this show would be had the dancers' stories been told in the modern day and age. Would the stories be the same? I'm really interested to see or hear such an interview.
Judy is the only character whose name is mentioned?
Apparantly you haven't SEEN the show. Everyone's name is mentioned, including Larry and Zach.

"Judy is the only character whose name is mentioned?"
At the beginning when they are called by their numbers. She is the only one who's name is connected to her audition number. Clearly, you must be spoon-fed information. Must be a product of public education.

"IF you change the stories, it's not A CHORUS LINE." - Munkustrap
Yeah but the beauty of "A Chorus Line" is it is a complete concept musical and I think the stories could change without changing the essence of the piece. I had read that Bennet was torn about the suggestion of changing the back stories. Wonder what he would think about it now.
Good article in Peter Filichia's column today on the show:
