I find it hard to believe that a show that moved so many people in Denver and had sold out shows would warrant such a review.

I find it quite easy to believe. *shrug* And this isn't the first mediocre to bad review I've read of the show. But then again, I really don't care. Barring some kind of miracle, I'm not going to watch it anyway. The sample CD...well, I wouldn't quite call it elevator music, but let's just say it's all too easy to imagine it as such. I started to play "count the cliches" with the lyrics, but eventually I lost track. I can't speak for the book or production values, but I wish that as much thought had been put into the lyrics as the casting.

One of the biggest problems with people today is the "dumbing down" of Americans. joeyjoe most likely has higher standards because he was raised in a time when there was genuinely good - even great - theatre to be found and his standards were created by what he was exposed to. I fear for this new generation of people who actually have such low standards as to find poorly written theatre pieces worth the high price of a standard ticket.
I suppose it's because they have nothing great to compare it to. And That's a shame.

but there IS genuinely good theater to be found now... it's just not on Broadway... and all these kids should take a look at what's out there, not what's being played to them... you know, if i had the money, i'd see EVERYTHING! but i can only live vicariously right now... if Brooklyn is a critical hit on Broadway, and i miss it, then shame on me... but i've heard more negative than positive from people i respect, and people who i know can be objective in their critiques... and i defer now to the previous posts of MargoChanning and robbiej...

Johnpopa - Exactly...If Bklyn wins every award, some people are STILL not gonna like it.. so...its just a matter of taste.. You could be a boxoffice success or be critically acclaimed and not have them packing in so..what's better? Like I said..different strokes...

I have to say...I was super excited to see Brooklyn because of the hype surrounding it - it sounded almost "Once On This Island"ish and I couldn't wait to see it.

Then I heard the sample cd songs.

Ever since then I'm like "eh" and have been debating whether or not to spend so much money on something that I'm genuinely unexcited about after hearing those songs.

I'm so thankful for the different reviews. I honestly think that when you read them, you can see who looks for the same things in a show that make it 'good' as you do. Reading the original review, I highly doubt I'll catch this one. Unless I hear from one of my good friends whose opinion I highly respect that I'm gonna love it.

Whoever said the cd sounded like Celine Dion woke up one morning, etc. - that's hysterical.

My best friend actually listened to the songs from the show at a link I sent him and replied with: it sounds like a musical of Diane Warren songs.

Can't find a better way to sum it up.

So thank you everyone for your mixed reviews - I'll keep reading them and see if someone can convince me otherwise, but right now...I don't think I'll be missing much.

Although I would like to see Cleavant. Something about him highly appeals to me, can't describe it.

I would have made sure TABOO did better. That show didn't deserve to close. I would have kept ROCKY HORROR until it was by far the longest running show of all time. I would also have DREAMGIRLS and FUNNY GIRL revived. A few of the shows I wanted back are actually coming such as 'NIGHT MOTHER, STREETCAR and GLASS MENAGERIE. I would also like newer works that actually have substance and don't just pander to the MTV generation for the sake of giving them something to aspire to. Not every show has to be inspirational to young girls.
