I agree with Matt -- after 30+ years of theatregoing and 800+ shows, Dreamgirls is the most thrilling experience I've ever had in the theatre.

Guess you did not read my review.... and there have been other negatives reviews as well, and some scathing ones on the ATC boards. Like I said before on the boards. I REALLY wanted to like this show, but its extremely flawed !!

I think this was a great review. Honest, and real. Not a teenybopper posting "omgz saw brooklen n it waz amazing, c it, eden is amasing". No this review was real and from an educated person.

Definetly, have no interest in seeing this trashy Broadway fluff of a show.

"I'm sorry, but I don't think that just because you are paying a lot of money, the show should be good."

Now that line captures so perfectly exactly what is wrong with insaniac fandom the likes of which this site is overflowing. I mean, it says it all, really.

That's why I keep hoping that "the powers that be" will get the show with the original Bennett staging back to New York, so I can stop trying to describe the indescribable to all those who were too young or simply missed it the first time around. As great as the score is (and many critics at the time thought that the score was the weakest part of the show), you have to see the masterpiece that was Bennett's direction, as well as Robin Wagner's set design and Tharon Musser's lighting design to even begin to appreciate why this show simply blew so many of us away the first time around and rendered us speechless and emotionally overwhelmed. While, yes the cast album is a nice 48 minute token of one part of the experience (and the concert album is valuable as a record of the whole score) the totality of the visual and aural and visceral impact is what was/is so powerul. Holliday, Derricks, Devine et al simply standing there belting the score would have been special by itself, the work that Bennett and his designers did could have gotten a standing ovation all by itself without a single note of the music being played -- it was THAT great.

When going to see a new musical, one should:

a) not expect too much from the book. (The writers were having an off day)

b) Forget about hearing well constructed melodies. (Heck, if Frank Wildhorn can get away with it, why shouldn't others?)

c) not look for good voices. (Let the microphones do their thing)

d) ignore the ugly costumes (there's a budget to deal with, you know)

e) try hard not to criticize the choreography (Fosse and Bennett are dead)

f) try to fit into those seats (they were made for munchkins)

...then you'll have a great time!
