What is MIXED? Other than a few compliments to the cast and not even because of THESE performances. I would say it is BAD. If you can't care about the characters, what is the point? (at least that is what I think is the bottom line of that review.)
bustopher: havent seen ACA yet, so this may be an ignorant question, but: how can you compare it to caroline? even in terms of critical reaction? surely the latter had a more nuanced story line?
This is just disgusting. What the hell do they want? It's a story on a stage with songs. A simple, elegant story. What in God's name is wrong with that?
"It's actually mixed but it does end on a downer, though he does seem to see what they are going for."
No, Brantley's review is certainly NOT mixed. He didn't like the show and his review was clearly negative.
"All we need to do now is wait and see whether AFFAIR will follow Broadway with the critical success CAROLINE got."
Bustopher, I'm confused by you are saying above. We're currently seeing the critical reaction to "A Catered Affair" and it's clearly not a "critical success." Right? Can you explain what you mean we're waiting to see? And just in case it's not coming across (you know you can't hear one's tone easily over the internet), I'm genuinely wanting to know what you meant, not being snarky. Thanks!
Higgins, I believe Bustopher was referring to the positive reviews CAROLINE got in London and various places after its Broadway run.
jv, how are the reviews "disgusting"? I have not seen the show, but a critic giving a negative review to a show is not disgusting.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
Yeah, I still can't wait to see this show. I always like to judge for myself despite what the critics may say. Can't let them make your mind up for you!
J* - Only time will tell... and they still have a week to fine tune. I have 3 show spots left to fill for my July trip and CB is one that I keep going back and forth on. I may (and I stress "may") let the reviews influence me on whether I see it or not. So many shows, so little time.

Cry-Baby should be about frozen by now. I assume the critics will be in this weekend, or early next week.
But Talkin' Broadway's review is pretty negative. I know that not many people here take Matthew Murray seriously, but since we're sharing reviews and all.
Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!
Brantley's an idiot. If you can't find something good in this show, its time to stop going to the theatre (or at least reviewing it). I saw it last week and felt that the score could have had a little more lift to it, but the story was good and the performances were wonderful (especially Faith). How they can write such a negative review is beyond me. I don't know what the hell they want from a show anymore. It's a very sweet and heartfelt show and I hope that people go see for themselves and make their own judgments. I haven't stopped thinking about this show since last Friday. Can't wait to see it again.
The only review of a show that matters is your own.
I've been following this piece since it's inception, listening to every clip/interview/etc., reading every article/review/etc. I'm not simply 'making claims' - I'm speaking what I believe to be true. As far as that lst part, well, that's my promsie to you, and the rest of the BWW family - To go to the Kerr and have an experience of my own - where my opinion won't be formulated and/or swayed by others. I want the best for this piece, and I'm going to give it a chance now that it's frozen and running on all cylinders ... to the dismay of Mr. Brantley and the rest of the bunch who can't find it within themselves to appreciate the unspoken beauty of it all.
