#1A CATERED AFFAIR Verdict
Posted: 4/22/08 at 9:19amUnless I've missed it, I haven't seen a lot of discussion about A CATERED AFFAIR since it opened. What's the opinion of the show from this group? From listening to a private live full-length recording of the show during its California run, I felt the show was extremely uninteresting...especially compare to the original television play and the motion picture. I realize that merely listening to a show isn't a fair way to judge it, but I must say that many of the NYC critics felt the same way. What's your opinion....for those who have now seen it in NYC?

I did the search and most of the postings deal with people's opinion of the critics' reviews and not with their own opinions of the show if they actually saw it.

Hey, hey, he didn't say B***g, he just said "private", possibly something from Bucchino himself??
And what the ...

Posted: 4/22/08 at 10:03amI went into the theatre with high hope. 45 minutes into the piece, I started checking my watch and couldn't wait to get away from those people! I'm not strickly a blockbuster lover- I loved Ellegies, Here Lies Jenny, Man of No Importance etc, BUT I hated this show! I was offered another ticket to see it again, free-and a much closer seat. It's a shame...but I have to pass! It may be only a 90 minute show, but teamed with a 90 minute train ride into and out of the city, and I'm wasting my time and funds. Sorry to be so disappointed in this production. It DOES OFFER a sterling cast acting up a storm...but it just left me depressed and unattached.

Come on jerby, look at the ads. All Norman Rockwell-esque with a couple in love (in a wedding dress, natch).
It hardly says drama.

Posted: 4/22/08 at 12:26pmI would say the verdict is Love It Or Hate It.
With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

Not Barker is correct.
And, I realize people see Faith Prince and think Guys and Dolls and Harvey and think Hairspray.
But those of you on BWW now know--it's a D R A M A.

Posted: 4/22/08 at 12:30pmIf the show could be fixed I would say remove the music, tone down the histrionics, and replace Harvey with a real actor.

Yea, and Elegies, Here Lies Jenny, and Man of No Importance are all such laugh riots!
And let's not forget the image of the wedding couple on top of a TAXI!

Posted: 4/22/08 at 12:38pmWhen we were in nyc I did not want to see it since I had heard things on this website but we were sitting next to someone who saw it during the matinee (prior to Little Mermaid) and they loved it. They said it was so sweet and sad and they cried..... So who really knows.

Posted: 4/22/08 at 12:40pmJerby, seriously, aren't you just the weensiest bit biased?
#19re: A CATERED AFFAIR Verdict
Posted: 4/22/08 at 12:46pmI don't discount that possibility, but trust me--I've not liked everything I've worked on. And, I gain nothing from the show running longer or not.
#20re: A CATERED AFFAIR Verdict
Posted: 4/22/08 at 12:52pmPerhaps, but don't you think the "stars" might like you a little more if they know you are defending the show to the bitter end?
#21re: A CATERED AFFAIR Verdict
Posted: 4/22/08 at 12:55pmThat's really cute of you. But, honey, they loved me before I ever saw the show, so no. Plus, if you really knew me, you'd know I don't kiss ass.
#22re: A CATERED AFFAIR Verdict
Posted: 4/22/08 at 1:00pmWell, it just comes off a little "shilly" regardless of the circumstances.

A shill pretends they are an innocent audience member. Everyone knows what I do there. And, I'll say it again---I don't defend everything I work on. I defend shows I believe in. I've defended shows I have nothing to do with. I've been whoring it up for BASH'd--I'm not involved with that show. I believe in it.
I have only spoken for this show as a fan.
