Sad to see such a little, underappreciated gem go too soon.
I am very upset I didn't get to see it once more before it closed, but I thought it was the best new musical of the 2007-2008 season.
Anyone going to the final performance/going to miss this show as well?

Posted: 7/27/08 at 11:36amI'll be at the last performance...I had a nightmare last night that I was a bit late and missed the opening number so I'll have to make sure I get out of my apt early today!

Posted: 7/27/08 at 11:41amI'll be there too. I had other plans but they fell through at the last minute and so I got a fairly decent ticket at around 11:45 last night.

Posted: 7/27/08 at 12:25pmWhat a seriously amazing show. I haven't been that moved in a long time. I count myself very lucky that I was able to see it! It is very sad to know this show didn't have the audience it needed to stay open longer

singerunlimited----I agree with everything you said. I went to see this show, after reading the critics' reviews and was regretting I bought the tickets (months before the opening).
Well, I was so moved by the acting (especially Faith and Tom)--I'm rarely moved to tears. I really don't understand why it didn't connect more. I guess most people expected a lighthearted musical comedy and so they never found their audience. But-----many people missed out on a very moving experience.

Posted: 7/27/08 at 7:57pmIt didn't connect more because today's theatre audiences want big fancy numbers that entertain them with loud pop culture familiarity. They are not interested in being moved by emotion and small quiet performances. I thought this was a very lovely show that deserved better. Thank you Harvey, Faith, Tom and cast and for a job well done!!

"They are not interested in being moved by emotion and small quiet performances. "
Not true at all. I am all for being moved by emotions and strong performances. The piece for many of us was just dull and boring.

I was there, and it really WAS a wonderful show. I am so glad I saw it before it closed. I had tears in my eyes more than a few times. It was just simple and quiet and moving
At the curtain calls, all the cast members (and I assume the understudies) got huge bouquets. When everyone (finally) quieted down (it took forever -- they all kept motioning for everyone to stop clapping), Harvey Fierstein thanked everyone, and then said "But where the f**k were you the last few --" and then stopped and said just kidding
I went to the stage door after -- it was pretty busy. I saw Tom Wopat and Mr Fierstein. Someone asked Harvey what he is doing next, and he said he didn't know, that "I thought I'd be here for at least a year"
Was anyone else there? It rained on us a little at the stage door, but not bad. I looked around for familiar faces (from peoples' pix on here), but didn't see any

I saw it Saturday. I wanted to like it, I really did. But I just couldn't like it as much as I wanted to. It has nothing to do with the fact that it wasn't flashy, that it was quiet. I have no problem with quiet shows. I just found it basically Father of the Bride with less of the humor. The songs were pretty...but nothing I was still humming or remotely had in my head when I got to the sidewalk.
Still, I'm glad I saw it.
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!
