A Chorus Line

I saw it this w/end and Charlotte was out. Her understudy was in and she didn't sing all the songs.
My question is - does Charlotte sing in all songs? Or was her replacement just not ready?

re: A Chorus Line

My question is- Why is this on the West End Board?
#3

re: A Chorus Line

Yep, definatley the wrong board.

re: A Chorus Line

tis on the West End board because of the very successfull Broadway revival and the hope it will transfer to W. End if only they can find an available theatre-- there are only 3 theatres with a big enough stage to house it. Hope that answers your curiosity re: A Chorus Line))

re: A Chorus Line

I remember seeing A CHORUS LINE in the West End years and years ago at Drury Lane and at that point the show had been running for sometime. The Cassie I saw was not much of a singer and she sang The Music And The Mirror very softly and was "ghosted" by two girls off stage. To make matters worse, she was a redhead so they dressed her in blue outfit instead of the traditional red. A CHORUS LINE doesn't need a huge stage any of the musical houses in the West End could house it.

re: A Chorus Line

Yes, but shows can/are continually adjusted to fit various stages. The arch may need to be wide but the show doesn't require much depth. The Shubert which originally housed the show only has a depth of 26' and the Schoenfeld where the current revival is playing has a depth of 33'. Here in Australia the original Oz production played in one theatre where the arch was 34' and another that was 36'. In the UK and Australia the stages seem to have more depth but smaller arches compared to their U.S. counterparts.

One theatre that it would fit nicely into is the Prince of Wales. How much life is left in MAMMA MIA?

Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre ;
Theatre Dimensions
Proscenium Opening: 40' 0"
Height of Proscenium: 38' 0"
Depth to proscenium: 26' 9"
Depth to front of stage: 28' 3"

re: A Chorus Line

Um, why am I wrong ? I didn't comment on the size of the arch at the Schoenfeld Theatre, I was commenting on the stage depth which isn't much by musical theatre standards. The trust which looks after the show must have made some allowances for various productions around the world, like said Sydney/Melbourne productions (in the 70's and again in the 90's).

So the Schoenfeld actually has less depth than I thought at 26'9" (28'3" to apron).

re: A Chorus Line

Rob is correct. ACL needs a wide stage. It doesnt need a huge depth but width plently.

Prince Edward could house this. Jersey Boys goes in in the Spring but I doubt it will last long here, I imagine after it re-coups it will transfer to a smaller venue for a sustained run. Hopefully paving way for ACL perhaps...or even ACL could go back to the Drury Lane, Im uncertain if LOTR can survive much longer past the end of the year...although I am gunning for 42nd Street!

re: A Chorus Line

Couldn't agree more. I really think Jersey Boys is going in there to make money quickly. I doubt Mamma Mia is going anywhere for a long while...it could transfer though easily again to somewhere like The Novello - I think ACL wuld fit amazingly into The POW.

As much I wish LOTR so much luck - it would be lovely to se 42nd Street go back home! Its such a "Drury Lane" show

re: A Chorus Line

"The National it appears have stopped doing musicals which is a pity --now they really know how to stage a show they used to do one annually and were all first class."

Not true. They did A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM in 2004 and CAROLINE, OR CHANGE in 2006. Also, I distinctly remember one or two of the projects Nick Hytner mentioned as 'in development' for the NT being musical pieces.

They don't do 'traditional' musicals under the Hytner regime, like OKLAHOMA and MY FAIR LADY etc, but I don't personally feel there's any need for the NT to...

re: A Chorus Line

A Chorus Line Played Drury Lane on its one and only West End run-a good run but not on of Drury Lanes longest-i saw it 5 times to less than half full houses! (go on quibble with me but its true-i work in accounts). The twice its been on tour in the UK its only been moderately suucessful. The second time less than the first. I cant really see it being given another West End run even with the Broadway run as it is. Its a very American show thats loved, of course by so many English theatre goers but is deemed too big a risk at the moment. One of the UK tours actually cancelled a few weeks before arriving at certain venues.
I would be the first to get a tkt if it ever did play london again.

re: A Chorus Line

what i dont like today is that unfortunatly it looks like its being sold as another tourist attraction like Les Miz Hairspray etc etc etc and etc yet again etc. Back in 77 it was raw- its a raw show. My memories are so strong from Drury Lane. I was at the last night at Drury Lane of the UK cast and have the 'cassette' from the sound deck- i swear when the house lights went down you can hear the audience stand and roar for at least 2 mins!!!! i will NEVER forget Diane Langton doing What I Did For Love! jez im welling up here RobUK

re: A Chorus Line

re: A Chorus Line

I saw it in 78 with the British cast and I have to say having seen the Broadway (replacement) cast and the Australian cast it was in a pretty sorry state. The theatre was about 1/4 full and the cast were for the most part lacking. As well as the aforementioned Cassie (Elizabeth Seal?), Connie was no longer Asian and the cast physically in no way resembled the shows poster. I do recall hearing that at one point the Australian Sheila was made a very good offer to go into the show in London. Back in those days there used to be a theory that in London when shows (musicals) opened you could get a good cast but good replacements were often hard to come by. I think those days have passed.

re: A Chorus Line

back then i think ACL was an exceptional case nothing like that had been in the UK before as indeed on Broadway nobody ever said the London production was fantastic i think London was glad it got here in any shape or form. very mismanaged from what i remember yes
