A Divine Look at The Color Purple; Photos

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

I am actually looking foward to this show the most.

It is great to see Virginia Woodruff in the show...she really stood out vocally in All Shook Up.

I am so excited about this show. I downloaded the music from Playbill.com and absolutely love The Color Purple song. It makes me happy every time I hear it.

I think they chose a rather ambitious house for this show, and I for one thought the music was hokey and sounds like something you would hear in a church...

And whats wrong with that? (hokey, would hear in a church)

thats comes off a tad racist...and I'm not calling you racist so don't get it twisted. You may have interpreted a different way but the way I read it came of alittle different. I'm not jumping on you or anything.

(Saying this in a funny way)...You don't wanna hear some gospel on Broadway?

I agree with Thesbijean.

A church music is hokey. It's not bad. It's not good. Just hokey.

It'll be hard to sell tickets to a show made up of hokey music and a story that really doesn't NEED retelling. Seems like an energetic and optimistic cast is involved though. We'll see how it does...

Oh, and there was a small 3-4 minute thing about the open rehearsal on the WB11 a few minutes ago. They showed a small clip of them actually singing (one song was Push Da Button the other I didnt know...) and they interviewed the leads asking random questions (mostly about Oprah) and the adorable girl playing Young Nettie belted out "Aint No Mountain High Enough" wonderfully.

Hopefully, there will be a video up soon on broadway.com

Well there was some gospel music in the movie. (God is trying to tell you something) Look at the storyline. It is only fitting that gospel music be included!! And the gospel I have heard in church has not been hokey. Also there is an article on Playbill.com with an explanation as to why Oprah's name is above the title even after all the money for the show was raised.

Let's hope that the casting directors of the movie "Dreamgirls" see this show. Then they will immediately see the error of their ways and cast Renee Elise Goldsberry as Deena.

Miss Felicia just sparkles in those pics...I hope she does on stage well!

Makeup, Marsha! These are color pics!

And why does that sound racist Unmasked? You throw word out an awful lot--especially since you don't know who or what we are...

I'm not trying to start anything, but you have a history of accusing people of racism, myself included, and as a person of mixed race, I find it insulting and it has no place on these boards.

I wish nothing but the best for this show. I've seen the film more times than I can count and read the book way back when it came out, though most of it was far too advanced for me at that age.

I was not calling him/her a racist or you.

I took offense to him basically saying that "church(gospel)music is hokey"......I don't find church music hokey so I took what he said alittle differently. I for one sing church music, so I took it as "so you find our music hokey?". I don't go around calling other peoples music "hokey" so I for one took it the other route.

as for my history of accusing people of racism........I have NEVER called anyone racist on this board...not Thesbijean or you Lildogs...so don't go there..your treading on thin ice with me there. I said what he said was a tad racist...I wasn't accusing him of straight up racism. I don't care if your mixed or not either...but I find it offensive when you call a certain type of music from a different culture "hokey"...especially when it come to religious music.

People need to chill - this is a message board. People are just posting opinions, no need to bitch ppl out because of their different views and nobody knows whose behind the screename, so everyone needs to chill.

I hope Broadway.com puts up a rehearsal video, i'm actually kinda interested in this show, i wasn't before. Anyone have any links to the set design? Or are there any links of other set designs for other shows? Thanks.

I am very worried about this one. I want it to work so well, so badly. I just do not like either of the preview songs I heard on the site. They sound generic to me and I'm not feeling a thing for them just yet. I really hope there's much more than what they are showing/telling us concerning the songs. I can only hope the best. I'm rooting for this one.
