JV- your behavior in this thread only proves my point. You only started this thread to AGAIN prove your dislike of SA, and then to "throw in" what Grey Gardens should have won about 1000 times. Seriously, when you said "if they wanted a good speech, they should have picked Doug Wright". Are you insane? That wasn't just saying SA gave bad speeches. You obviously started this thread to bash SA and try and hide it by bashing the speeches. All you can say is bug off because deep down you know I'm 100% right. So you "bug off".

So while we're on the subject of the SA folks, and seeing as the "Unintelligent comments" thread has been removed, and seeing as people want to move on...
May I interject and ask did I *really* see Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater kissing Michael Cerveris at one point during the proceedings, or does sleep deprivation make for some funny hallucinations?

Lord.
Grey Gardens didn't win. It will never, ever win a "Best New Musical," Tony Award.
It's time to get over it.

750 Tony voters disagree with you along with the New YOrk critics.
A) The TONYs aren't given out by unanimous vote...it's majority rules. So, you have NO authority to state that EVERY TONY voter voted for SPRING AWAKENING.
B)SPRING AWAKENING did NOT recieve across the board raves. So, you're wrong about the critics, too.
I'm not trying to spread hate. I'm just correcting a false statement. Not EVERY TONY voter agrees with you.

<< know that. im sorry my wording was wrong, however the majority of critics and tony voters did like spring awakening. >>
Stageagent,
Since you were nice enough to send me a nasty PM (yet, yours are blocked, so I could not reply).... what in the world are you talking about? I honestly dont remember writing anything
"nasty" at all about "SA"- I have not even seen it yet (going on 6/20) , so I refuse to pass any judgement-- how many other PM's did you send out calling people "rude" ?
EDIT: Is THIS what you are referring to??? -
This was what I posted on another thread----
<< I will reserve judgement on "SA" until I see it next week, but "AQ" is brilliant..... I am thinking that "SA" is not.
>>
I really dont think its that much of a knock on "SA"--- after seeing their performance last night, I am guessing that the show is not BRILLIANT- might be very good--- Like I said... havent seen it yet, but my guess is that it is not as intelligent as "AQ"- I could be totally wrong.

Now that I have the energy to respond to you-
I knew 100% Spring Awakening would win. I knew it'd probably win Best Book too. However, there was no need for such prententious speeches. They could have been classy. However, Steven Sater, Dunkin Sheik and the producers of the show went on about themselves.
I'll exclude Michael Mayer. I've just rewatched his speech and it was a very nice one. I enjoyed his work on the show, though I found it far from revolutionary.

To start, I think Spring Awakening is good, not great. I have issues with much of the production, incl adaptation (what happened to time and place?), the design (the lights looked like the Home Depot lighting dept.), direction (too hip for it's own good), and some of the performances (the underperforming of the women, and the overacting of the men, yeah, I GET IT!). There is not enough time for me to elaborate, but please tell me, what's up with the "little ho's on the prairie" look?
I agree with most that the S.A. people at the Tony's were a bit much. This isn't the second coming people, you've won an award and you aren't even changing the face of musical thatre as we know it. Get over yourselves. Be humble, say thanks, and get off the stage.
...and please, there is no need for an EMMY like procession of the entire cast, crew, usherettes, candy and beverage guy, box office personal, et al to the podium. Television is tacky. The theatre shouldn't be. Don't cheapen it anymore.
At work this morning (at a Los Angeles talent agency) the big question was "what the hell is Spring Awakening?". Most were confused by what they saw and said it looked annoying. That medley was no way to sell more seats or a tour.
Just some thoughts.

Posted: 6/11/07 at 4:26pmSater's speech was the only one that I found to be at all off-putting, and that was more because I thought he looked terrified, which is a weird emotion to have while accepting a Tony. I thought Mayer's speech was very nice and sincere, and I actually loved Sheik's speech. I don't get how it was lacking in humility. He seemed to have been really struck by how welcoming the musical theater community was of his music, and of how much depth there is in Broadway shows-basically, that there's a lot more to musical theater than he and other rock composers would normally assume. I much prefer that kind of honest acknowledgement of having learned something from the musical theater community to the usual fake "I can't believe I was even nominated" kind of modesty that we usually see.

Was that a little Sater "clone" sitting next to him?
It just gets scarier nd scarier.
I have problems with SPRING AWAKENING but I also enjoyed a lot of it. The presentation of their show made the people I was watching with go EWWWW.

To all you haters...you need to come off YOUR high horse!!!!
Shows come along and change the face of Broadway of their time. SA did it this year and another show will come along and do it again. SA might not have changed the face of Bway in the way like "oh my god broadway will never be the same holy cow this is groundbreaking!!" But it did change it in some way weather you like it or not. This show brings a new group of people into the theatre! People who wouldnt go see GG or Curtains or Company etc. Last night was SA's night. THEY DESERVE IT! If you think they came across arrogant, which I dont, so be it. They are so overwhelmed and in shock, excited, and whatever...they dont have time or the focus to say a perfect speech and worry about how they are coming off. Who cares!!! Grow up! Stop hating. They are probably so happy and then there are all of you hating! This show means so much to them. Think if you were in their shoes and saw your little idea become a Tony Award Winning show. So just stop hating...let it go! Go watch Paris Hilton on the simple life and be mad about the fact that this woman is even famous!

#95re: A Letter to the Folks Behind Spring Awakening
Posted: 6/11/07 at 5:21pmI saw the broadcast and I failed to see all this "arrogance" the bitter bunch has been complaining about. They seemed like anyone else who was happy they won the Tony to me. Except for the gay guy who talked about his wife. That was just weird, but not particularly arrogant. And as for all the producers taking to the stage for the final award, how is it different from EVERY OTHER YEAR? Good grief! You people are so weird.

Posted: 6/11/07 at 5:24pmIt's only different because it's SA, Matt. If it were any other show they'd be screaming- they deserve to be egotistical! They worked soooo hard!!!

Well, SA as opposed to GG or Curtains has a difficult task starting tonight - it is going to have a bunch of people going to look for every Tony it won. There will be major overall disappointment if they fail to see why it won a trillion awards.
I think expectation is one of the things that can hurt a show the most.
#98re: A Letter to the Folks Behind Spring Awakening
Posted: 6/11/07 at 6:41pmPlease, Spring Awakening just won how many Tonys? What difference does it make if people pick on it? Defending the show when it clearly doesn't need it just comes across as petty and overly obsessed with your "authority" as a fan. If the show means that much to you, you'd just let threads like this roll off your back and celebrate in their wins instead of setting out on the offensive to put down anyone that dare object.

The entire board is littered with threads bashing the show. There's no problem with the few fans on this board defending it. And yes, not the whole world loves SA. The majority of this board seems to hate it with a passion. We should let it roll off their backs, but it's no problem if they intentionally create threads to bash it? Sure.
