wickedfan - I loved your thoughts. Very well said. I don't necessarily agree with all of them, but I really enjoyed reading them.
I agree with you 100% on Erin Davie. I feel like she tapped into the real Charlotte more in Act II than she did in Act I. At first I thought she just didn't fully understand the character, but as the show went on I realized that she was directed that way and was just waiting to bust with her own interpretation (which she did a few times).
But, I rather enjoyed Ramona Mallory's performance. I appreciated the fact that she stuck to her character the entire time. And there is no way anyone can say she isn't a beautiful vocalist. I could listen to her sing all day. I enjoyed her sense of comedy, but I can see how someone would find it over the top.
I also agree with you on Leigh Ann Larkin. I wasn't a fan of her's at all going into the show (I hated her Dainty June). Yes, Petra is a sexual character, but Larkin was way too obvious with the role. Her "The Miller's Son" was just...strange. Nothing with her seemed fluid or natural...all very forced as if she was begging for the audience's attention.
And Hunter Ryan Herdlicka...horrible performance. I think that Mr. Herdlicka is very talented. I just don't believe him to be a Henrik. I wasn't impressed.
I'm still up in the air over how I feel about Catherine Zeta-Jones' performance. There are parts I loved, parts I just liked, and parts I hated. She was very "showy" with the role and I understand that she was portraying an aging actress, but she was just very stagey. She definitely didn't have the heart of Desiree that I've seen and loved in the past. I did, however, enjoy the chemistry she had with Alexander Hansen.
And Angela Lansbury...while I found her Madame Armfeldt to be a little too "cute," I did enjoy her overall. She's a true gem of the stage, but she could have given me just a little more cynicism.
I actually really enjoyed the set and the orchestra. I could barely even notice that it was only an eight piece orchestra.
And I strongly disliked Stephen R. Buntrock. Although he portrayed a smaller role and his voice is beautiful, I found him to be annoying. Just annoying. Not sure how to explain myself on this one...
What this production needs is Michael Blakemore's comedic timing, Bartlett Sher's style and NONE of Trevor Nunn's "elegance."
Well put.
^ Couldn't agree more.
Just wondering, it is even acceptable for someone to diss Lansbury at this point. I mean, would any critic be so bold as to say she is past her prime? It seems like if someone expresses displeasure with her or her performances, they get attacked vehemently. I love Angela, but in Blithe Spirit she was dropping lines and just kept covering with wild gestures. Granted, she cracked me up to no end, but she's not above reproach-or is she?

She flubbed a line during the wooden ring scene when I saw ALNM, but I didn't care at all. It's Angela Lansbury.

The immaturity level in the room just raised 50%.
We get it, muscle. You saw the show. Good for you.
Everybody clap hands, say 'yeah-yeah'.
Trash, if you start talking about me, I have ALOT to say about you...and what others think about you...so, I wouldn't keep talking about me being immature...and as they say...'it takes one, to know one' =)
