Okay, so as we all know that WICKED, the smash hit Broadway musical that got mediocre reviews, is sold out until the apocalypse.
In response to all of the Wicked casting threads, I propose this idea.
Why hire Saycon or Ana or anyone else to play Elphaba? Wicked is sold out. There are no "above-the-title" names anymore. What are the virtues of hiring any new cast members (recycled or totally fresh) when you can just have Bob the Tech Guy perform the role?
The show is sold out. There are no names. Therefore, no refunds can be offered.
Bob the Tech Guy can perform the roles and nobody would care. Why? Because they're seeing WICKED.
Yes, Equity would get in the way, so why not have Bob the Tech Guy join the Union?
Wicked has played to 100% capacity since February 19, 2006. They've only had about 6 weeks below 100%. The lowest they've gone to was 88% capacity the week they opened.
No matter who they get, they can't raise ticket sales. They're already at 100% and no Standing Room is offered.
Say Ana Gasteyer signs a 6 month contract. Those 6 months are already sold out. The producers have their money regardless of who performs. Hence, Bob the Tech Guy. Bob, the guy who stands in the back and works the Wizard Head, who always wanted his shot at actual Broadway fame. Bob wants to play Elphaba, in all her flying glory. Why not?
Please Note: This obviously wouldn't happen.

I did a community theatre production of "Half a Sixpense" with Bob the Tech Guy several years ago. He could do it, but they'd have to lower the keys a little.

I'm a big fan of Bob the Tech guy. I saw him in RENT.
I even met him once. He signed my playbill.

I saw Bob the Tech Guy in a workshop of "Snakes!" (The musical of 'Snakes on a Plane.' He did a pretty good job, if a bit uneven. He brought down the house with his first act closing song "There are Mother-f*cking Snakes on this Mother-f*cking Plane!"
I'm surprised he wants to do Wicked though, I thought he was touring as Meg in "Little Women."

Actually, I think they may need to go a little higher for BtTG. After all, he's done Christine in Phantom.

Posted: 10/1/06 at 11:39amSorry guys, but Bob the tech guy is a little bit too fat to fit down the trap door in the melting scene. The tech crew will have to either make a bigger hole for Bob to fit down, or cut the scene all together.

Bob the Tech Guy is a friend of mine. We've done some community theater together... and I think he and my brother dated on and off for a while. I can tell you... there are contracts in the works but nothing's been signed. He's holding out for more money. The producers REALLY want him. Especially after his recent successful turn as Mary Poppins in London.
Keep your fingers crossed guys!
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride.
I love you because I know no other way than this.
I believe in fate
But it's up to us to follow through
