I particulary hated this show! Nothing aboout it was memorable! Donna Murphy was so bad and the songs were not anywhere near perfection! I just didn't like it. Not one memorable character, song, dance, nothing! Only God knows how it won the Best Musical Tony in the '50's. It was just plain boring!!! After seeing this show, I can understand why ticket sales are doing awful! Now if someone could explain why the excellent 'Little Shop' is doing so bad...

Posted: 6/14/04 at 6:07pmI don't like Donna Murphy or Wonderful Town. Something about her voice bothers me. I saw her Tony performance and I thought the song was stupid and I was about to commit suicide from her voice.

Posted: 6/14/04 at 6:12pmI thought Donna performance at the tonys was outstanding, one of the best of the night, I thought she did an amzing job and the song has been in my head ever since. What are the reasons you thought it was not good?

You kids have no clue. Donna is a fabulous actress and sang IN CHARACTER on the Tony Awards and does so in every performance in the show. It doesn't have the special effects children of the 21st Century have come to expect, but it has great heart and great talent and perhaps someday you'll see that.

Posted: 6/14/04 at 6:15pmTo tell you the truth, the songs themselves just annoy me. I don't really like her voice that much. It seems a little...raspy? I'm looking for the right word. But I'll admit, I'm not that credible, just a harsh critic so I guess that's why she's amazing to everyone else.

Posted: 6/14/04 at 6:15pmthis one came WAY before TMM... funny, too, that i'm listening to the 1996 studio cast recording right now... I partularly enjoy most, if not all, of the Comden & Green shows, and this one also has music by Bernstein... a match made in heaven... Updated On: 6/14/04 at 06:15 PM

Posted: 6/14/04 at 6:17pmI know. It's a REVIVAL so it obviously came before Millie. By the way...is that implying that I only like Broadway for modern shows? Well, that's not true. A Chorus Line and Chicago (NOT THE MOVIE) are two of my favorite and they're from the 70's.

I think Donna's voice is incredibly solid, she is such a great actress. While I do agree that there are other musicals with a similar subject or story line that is is a subject that sometimes make the best musical, i think the show looks amazing and while i havent seen the show personally, the Tony's defiantly made me want to see the show. Plus the beloved Tim Shew is in the cast

"How many shows are there gonna be about a girl moving to the city to make a living!!!??"
Ah, but this was one of the FIRST shows. The source material was written and actually experienced in the 1930's, when women really didn't do that sort of thing. It was scandalous. You need to leave behind your 2004 mindset and move back in time. (Like suspending disbelief and living in the land of Oz, which never existed.)
The show isn't the greatest ever written, but it does have wonderful music and superb performances. We can agree to disagree. I don't get the vicious attacks on all the shows that are not the favorite of a person. It smacks of sports-blindness, "my team is the BEST and everyone else SUCKS and doesn't deserve to play the game. If they DARE beat my team, we will wait in an alley and beat them up!"
That attitude, taken to extremes, leads to wars. Really.
We get it. You don't like any show but Wicked.

Posted: 6/14/04 at 6:29pmI loved Wonderful Town. The number performed at the Tonys did not represent the show as well as some other ones would have. This play was the first time that I ever saw Donna Murphy and I was very impressed.

i fully enjoy the sountrack of this show but i must agree that was possibly the worst number they could have chosen for donna to sing at the tonys- i would have voted for 100 easy ways, conga or even ohio personally

Posted: 6/14/04 at 6:36pmWONDERFUL TOWN is one of my all-time favorites! I must admit that I'm more inclined to my Rosalind Russell OCR than the revival, but the score is excellent. I consider "One Hundred Easy Ways" one of the funniest songs in Broadway history. (Hmmm.. time to start a new thread...)

Wonderful Town was a good show not one of my favorites but okay. It was supposed to be set in the 50's. It is based on the movie My Sister Eileen. I think Donna Murphy was the whole show and a very talented lady.

Wonderful Town was so entertaining. I thought Donna WAS INCREDIBLE. Kiddies, Wicked is not the only good musical.
I loved everything about Wonderful Town. The score blew me away.
I also thought the two best numbers at the Tony Awards were:
Avenue Q and Wonderful Town.

Posted: 6/14/04 at 7:54pmI liked the Wonderful Town number at the Tonys because it showed off the Tony award winning choreography "wonderfully". There probably was something else they could have done that was better though.

Posted: 6/14/04 at 7:54pmThe show is not pointless. If you appreciate and understand theatre, not one show is pointless. Donna Murphy is amazing! As someone said, Donna Murphy is always singing in character, if you know what that means. I agree, she gave the best performance at the Tonys. I am currently listening to the New Broadway Cast Recording. The show is classic theatre, not something like Wicked.

The best numbers of Wonderful Town were not shown at the Tony Awards. The show is a winner. I paid to see it twice!
My favorite numbers:
100 Ways To Lose A Man
Conga
My Darling Eileen
See Wonderful Town. It will especially appeal to all old crows!
Old crows appreciate a great old musical.

Donna Murphy: Our favorite dish IS NOT fish.
That Tony performance really bugged me. I know I'm not being too open-minded, and yeah, Donna Murphy was really into character, but her character is just plain bad. Honestly...WHY? And can I ask what exactly was that note she butchers at the end of the song?
