"...but I wouldn't say that at any point in a MUSICAL should quality of voice be sacrificed for anything."
I forgot who said that (even though I JUST copied and pasted it from the post), but I would like to counterpoint that point. Acting in a musical is still acting. If you were acting a part in a play, some characters should (or at least could) be played with different voices for characterization. The same goes for a musical. If, say, Barbara Cook were to sing "The Ladies Who Lunch" like she would sing any other song, it wouldn't work at all because Joanne pretty much needs that voice - not to mention Sondheim wrote the song specifically to be sung like that. That is an extreme example, but the idea is similar. Adam is acting, and based only by his vocal choices, I'd say he did a damn good job.
And remember - it's not just a MUSICAL - it's MUSICAL THEATRE! Even if it is a movie, the concept is the same.
