^^^ Based on the production at the Ahmanson in LA, I'd say the last FOLLIES revival pretty much WAS in the minimal set realm. (And I loved it, BTW, but the setting didn't compare to the original, certainly.)
I always thought the original SUNSET BOULEVARD set was a huge miscalculation. Yes, it looked amazing at first glance, but once it lifted into the air, marble and terrazzo were revealed to be plywood. I suppose that may have been the point in a "Paper Moon" sort of way, but it didn't work for me. (And BTW and FWIW, in LA, Close played Norma Desmond as if she were Cruella DeVille.)
