Emcee - NEVER apologize for liking something! No matter how much you may come to a critical awareness of the piece, the fact remains that it is a beautiful and wonderful memory that you get to carry with you til your last breath - and THAT counts more than anything. In the end, it's all that matters
awww, DGrant, I think there are tears in my eyes! Thank you.
My favorites:
Deborah Cox [Aida]
Adam Pascal [Radames]
Lisa Brescia & Idina Menzel [Amneris]
Eric LaJuan Summers [Mereb]
And Zoser... I didn't like his character at all, so I honestly don't have a favorite... but I saw Micky Dolenz & I've heard John Hickock and a few others

Zoser was such a nothing role, but I really missed John when Monsieur Dolenz stepped in (and the time I saw Neil Benari as an understudy).
Micky made me sad. Very sad. He looked like an oversized cartoon character. I missed John and his creepiness. When I saw him in Little Women, I got him to sign my AIDA book, like a good little fan.
John was really creepy. Dolenz was jaw-droppingly bad! Just pathetic.
ooo, i should get kelli to sign my dracula playbill
Someone said that Michelle Williams was really bad... anyone have a review on her... becuase I would love to hear a more detailed review on how she did
And emcee... I honestly never put two and two together with him and aida and little women. Isn't he old? Not to be mean, but I think that is kind of weird becuase of hte age difference between sutton and john

Isn't John playing the tutor? The part Eric Stoltz played in the Winona Ryder movie?? I know he's not playing Laurie, so it's not like he and Sutton are an item at any point (it'd be whoever's playing Meg).
No, he's actually not nearly as old as they made him look to play Zoser. Mid-to-late 30's, maybe? He's playing the professor!
My favorite is definitely the OBC. I thought Heather Headley was phenomenal as AIDA.

Sherie by far! i do like idinas randition of strongest suit but i do love sheries voice! and rob wow im surprised how fast you got obsessed with this cd, and u didnt want it! and i re instate the weasel nickname!
The OBC, far and away is my favorite. Sherie has the voice and the comical ability perfected in that role.
As for the replacement, Deborah, Will and Lisa were all fantastic too.
I adore this show.
To quote Mr. Brantley:
"PRETTY much everything that's right about 'Aida,' the new Disney cartoon pretending to be a Broadway musical, can be summed up in two words: Heather Headley."
I have love for the OBC, so those are my picks. I must also mention the lovely Cheyenne Jackson. I saw him the beginning of July of 2004. I went the April before over spring break, but returned to see Adam's return performance. Unfortunately due to some unforeseen traffic issues Adam wasn't performing that night. (I wasn't very happy because that was the sole reason for my trip).
Anyway, I was feel extremely privledged to have seen Cheyenne's performance that night. Through my "bitterness" I was able to see how wonderful he was, his vocals were top notch and his acting matched. BTW he hit "the note."

traffic issues... *snort*

Maya Days was pretty phenominal. It was a different take, but it made the most sense. She was a gorgeous, strong, princess who was still young and terrified. Vocally she sounded great...like a Disney princess!
And no one could Top Sherie...Idina came close but her acting wasn't as strong. Vocally she was amazing, but Sherie was soooooo funny.
I also kind of liked Matt Bogart.

I saw the show twice: first time with Heather Headley, Adam Pascal and Kelli Fournier (Amneris u/s). The second time: Simone as Aida, Adam again, and Felicia Finley as Amneris.
Simone was fantastic, so much better in every way than Heather. And Kelli seemed to be more at ease with her role than Felicia tried so much to be funny it really started to turn against her.
I fell in love with this show too. DGrant, thanks for your wonderful comment about not apologizing for liking something. It's one of the greatest pleasures in life.
seeing Heather Headley was like going to church. made my mother cry, she is just amazing. Adam no one can beat him, um i loved Felica and i loved John as the Pharaoh. hmm i miss this show
AIDA is my show!!!!
Favorite Amneris- Lisa
Favroite Aida- Saycon
Favorite Radames- Adam
Favorite Mereb- myself!

No one can ever top the original cast, all three of whom were wonderful. That said, Aida had some damn fine replacements.
My favorite replacement Aida was the fabulous Maya Days (full disclosure: she's a friend of mine). She gave a very different performance than Headley did (more subdued and vulnerable), but was still excellent. I also very much enjoyed the Aida's of Deborah Cox and Paulette Ivory. Simone was a fine singer, but couldn't act at all. Toni Braxton and Michelle Williams were both disasters.
For Radames, I really enjoyed Jeremy Kushnier and Matt Bogart. Two very different takes on the role (Jeremy's was similar to Pascal's, but Bogart's was completely different), but still good. Will Chase got stuck with hideous Aida's most of the time, and I think that brought him down.
My favorite replacement Amneris was Idina. She was the only other Amneris besides Sherie to get all the laughs, but manage to remain heartbreaking at the end. Her vocals were, as you would expect, pretty incredible. Felicia Finley had no sense of comedic timing, and Lisa Brescia was as bland as bland can be. Darcy Roberts was actually also very good in the role.
Donnie Kehr was my favorite replacement Zoser. He was creepier than John even. Neil Benari was a disaster. Micky Dolenz was ok. Neil and Micky both had the same problem- neither looked at all menacing.
I agree with those who described the show as a "guilty pleasure." That's what it was for me.
Sorry, jacking a bit, but it's interesting what you said about your love for Aida Em, that's exactly how I feel about Wicked, even though it's so much more recent. I fell in love when I saw it and then I came here and realize it has flaws and it's not absolute perfection but I can't help still loving it. I would hope maybe everyone has at least one show like that.
And umm, yaay for Aida! The only time I saw the show I saw Schele Williams as Aida(didn't impress me), Adam as Radames(yaay!) and Felicia Finley as Amneris who I thought was perfectly adequate.

I saw Aida w/ Toni Braxton.
I'm seeing it on Wednesday in Kansas! I'm so excited to see the differences in the performance.
When I saw Heather, I thought she sang amazingly well, but it didn't make up for the fact that I could not understand nearly all of her dialogue. When she spoke, she barely opened her mouth and mumbled everything. She used this weird affected tone and pattern of speech that sounded like she was trying to be "intense" or "powerful" in every sentence she uttered. It reminded me of manual transmission trying to go up a steep grade. She had two emotions: quiet and intense, and loud and intense. I was so disappointed because I loved her in The Lion King, but I could not figure out why she got a Tony for Aida.
WRQ, you saw Schele Williams?! Damn, I would have KILLED to see her go on. It's funny, I keep seeing her at random events I go to, and I keep wanting to say hello and tell her how much I loved the show, but I get scared and don't.
