Why is the same reason the show will be a hit: the album. Everyone has decided it's wonderful Green Day has written a rock opera. And Green Day is huge.
That still doesn't mean there's a story. Well, I should say, at least in its premiere production.

There IS a story....but it may not be getting delivered well. The story has existed since the conception of the album -- no matter how loosely or poorly.
I am not often a fan of the movie musical, as I feel many of them don't do THEATER justice. However, I will reserve judgement until after I actually see the show. (Good lord, hurry up and get here April!)

The same plot was then adapted into a stage show, and the stage show's immense success has people reconsidering making the originally planned movie musical.
