ASSASINS OR WICKED? Who will take the Tony?
#0ASSASINS OR WICKED? Who will take the Tony?
Posted: 4/23/04 at 1:00pmSo if they do indeed decide to consider Assassins a new musical as opposed to a revival ( I think they meet on it May 6) will Assasins win? ( and sorry for the mispelling in the subect)

Posted: 4/23/04 at 1:04pmSo far everyone else considers it a reveval. I think the Tony comittee will concur.

Posted: 4/23/04 at 1:05pmNot according to most people interviewed in that article in the post ( and yes.. I know.. it is the post). The argument is that Assassins never played broadway and unlike Little Shop is not considerd a mainstay in musical theater repertory. ( the article is todays NY post. Michael reides colunm)

A logical compromise would be if Assassins, like Little Shop, is ruled a revival but that they allow the book and score (for both shows) to be eligible, since the authors never had their work considered for Tony recognition.

Magruder,
That would be a great compromise. But I would imagine the producers are pushing for the best musical category. And if Assassins goes in the revival category and wins; it would definitely be the end of Wonderful Town ( not a bad thing since I was bored by it)

Posted: 4/23/04 at 2:19pmI would think the Roundabout would want it to be considered a revival. I don't think it would win best musical over WICKED (I think it is a better musical, but I can't see road voters selecting it). It seems like winning best revival is a strong possibility. If it's ruled a new show, it might take best score. Best revival will mean more at the box office, I hope. Will Mantello be nominated for both WICKED and ASSASSINS? Will he win? If so, for which show?

ASSASSINS has been produced over 1000 times.
This should be a no-brainer.
But this is the Tony Awards.

Assassins is hardly the standard that Little Shop is. My high school did Little Shop- it doesn't get much more mainstream than that.
I think that Assassins has a chance of being considered new because it is slightly different than the production that ran Off-Broadway. Besides, remember that this revival rule was instated to prevent La Boheme from being considered new. Assassins doesn't even come close to that standard.
That said, I'm a bit divided on where I'd like it to be. I think it would have an excellent chance of winning Best Revival, but Best Musical is the big prize. That's the one everyone cares about. And on top of the politics involved, Wicked seems to be many people's flashy, "tourable" favorite. So I don't know...

Posted: 4/23/04 at 5:43pmPersonally I think it should be eligible for Best Musical. If it is, I think it would easily beat Wicked.

Posted: 4/23/04 at 5:51pmI agree with that. If ASSASSINS is considered for Best Musical it could easily beat WICKED. It's a far far better piece of intelligent musical theatre. But, then again the best show rarely ever wins Best Musical. They should change the category to the "Most Commercial New Musical of the Year".

Posted: 4/23/04 at 7:38pmIn the event that ASSASSINS is considered as a revival, THEN I would want the Best Musical award to go to AVENUE Q as well. It's not that I HATE WICKED, because I don't hate it, I just think AVENUE Q is a better written show. And if ASSASSINS is a revival it will practically be no contest with WONDERFUL TOWN or LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, and it will take a lot more than Joey Fatone to keep that plant eating up Broadway....

Posted: 4/23/04 at 10:56pmOne thing is for sure...this year's competition for Best Musical and Best Revival will be the most fierce in a while. Several serious contenders in each category.

Posted: 4/23/04 at 11:21pmunfortunately, because this year's competition is so fierce and there is so much dispute as to which shows should be considered for the individual categories (you would THINK that would be a given) what will probably happen is, the higher ranking shows will split the votes and an underdog like Caroline or Change will win the Tony. This happens a lot.

Secret;
You say it happens alot. When has it happened? It is usually the big splashy ones that get the award.

As much as I hate to say this, WICKED is a lock on best musical, even if by some fluke ASSASSINS is considered for Best Musical (for me, if a score has been heard before this season and a show has been previously staged, it is a revival).
The biggest bloc of TONY voters are the tour booking groups, and many of them have money in WICKED.

Posted: 4/24/04 at 10:14pmIf ASSASSINS is ruled a revival, the Tony voters can split awards all around and have their cake and eat it too. They can give WICKED best musical (and create more appetite for it on the road), give AVENUE Q best score, CAROLINE best book, ASSASSINS best revival and Donna Murphy best actress. I do think voters who enjoyed ASSASSINS and WONDERFUL TOWN that decide to go with ASSASSINS as best revival, might be more inclined to give WONDERFUL TOWN something by rewarding Murphy.
