TPDC,
The only thing is that I think Tonya Pinkins will get the best actress nod and Wonderful Town will be empty handed. And also.. Wonderful Town is also going out on a national tour. Oh well.. all of a sudden the tony race this year will exciting. Cool. :)

Why Assassins or Wicked? I have yet to see Assassins so i can't
judge but if there is any justice Avenue Q will take Best Musical.
Now i have not seen Assassins and the cast is great but i adore Avenue Q. I also love Caroline Or Change.
I loved the women in Wicked and the sets but was not thrilled with the score.

Posted: 4/24/04 at 11:15pmI also love Q. And in a ideal world it would win. But I just don't see it happening.

Why because it is the most creative, funny, charming and exciting musical to come to Broadway.
Avenue Q is the smartest musical i have seen in a long time.
(Smartest since Hairspray! And so much fun)

Posted: 4/24/04 at 11:30pmI think many of the Tony races will be interesting this year. Best actress could go to Pinkins, Murphy, Chenoweth or Menzel and you could make the case easily for any of them. I think if WICKED and WONDERFUL TOWN invite Tony voters back to their shows, the race will be even tighter. It pushed Harvey over the top last year.

Posted: 4/25/04 at 12:21amwow 2 totally different shows. i would say assassins, if it was considered best "new" musical, if it's a revivial it's a no brainer. if it's wicked and ave q, without a doubt, ave q.

I don't know if anyone here has seen "Caroline, or Change" yet, but I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that it is a likely Best Musical winner. Especially with the Tony Kushner pedigree.
Frankly, "Wicked" is a well-produced but mediocre musical IMO, with an awful score. "Avenue Q" is more worthy.

Posted: 4/26/04 at 5:51pmGiven Tony Award history, Assassins will probably fall under Revival and win with Wicked winning Musical and Avenue Q winning Book and Score. Either that, or it will be a Wicked watershed. The 93-94 season was an anomoly that Passion won (and rightly so) mainly because there was a rather large anti-Disney furor. A Grand Night for Singing and Cyrano didn't stand a chance aginst Sondheim and Disney.

Posted: 4/26/04 at 8:50pmThe weird revival rule is only a couple of years old, and hasn't been tested a whole lot yet. I guess you could say that this is almost like another Urinetown/Millie situation, except we'll have to go through it twice over. Wicked vs. Assassins right now, and Wicked vs. Avenue Q once the nominations are made. (If Assassins is ruled a revival.) We'll see...

Posted: 4/26/04 at 8:53pmAvenue Q should win but something else will win -- just like Ragtime should have won and didn't.

Posted: 4/26/04 at 10:03pmin a perfect world, assassins will get best revival and ave q will get best musical. id love to see assassins compete for best musical... and even though i would vote for it... id feel uncomfortable doing so since its not a new work.

What a precarious situation this revival rule puts shows in. I could understand why the Tony people would want to prevent "La Boheme" from winning Best Musical since its been around longer than any of us, but "Assassins" and "Little Shop" are being robbed of Tony honors (in terms of nominations) for their marvelous scores. Oh what a tangled web...
(I think "Wicked" might be a lock for top honor. Whichever category "Assassins" gets into, it will win, me thinks. And that is almost guaranteed to be in the revival category)
I guess we can only wait and see...

Avenue Q got some of the best reviews of the season. However, remember the fate of "Urinetown" at the Tonys? Best Book, Score and Director, while the biggie went to "Thoroughly Modern Millie. Similar with "Into the Woods" and "Phantom". I would love for the precedents to be broken.

Posted: 4/26/04 at 11:55pmI think the most important thing for Avenue Q is not wether it wins or looses... but how their number comes thru in the Tony telecast. Seriously; if they do a great number.. it will help them inmensley towards becoming a boxoffice blockbuster.
