Excellent news. I'm curious to see who is cast as Amy Morton's replacement.
When do the new block of tix for the Music Box run go on-sale? It says that 'a new block is on-sale NOW' -- buuuut, having just checked Telecharge, nothing's listed.

Sweet, I was worried I wouldn't get a chance to see the play. Unfortunately I won't be able to see Amy Morton, but oh well. Let's hope they get a fine replacement.

I don't really understand why they can't stay in the Imperial until Billy Elliot comes over...

3 words: The Scottish Play.
There's a really big set piece in Billy Elliot that requires them to dig up part of the stage. Also I think there is a part of the staging that calls for Billy Elliot to exit the theater down an aisle, so they might be reconfiguring the seating to accommodate that by creating a center aisle down the orchestra section.

Yes - the staircase is constructed in 1 piece and must go down entirely to the basement.
This is wonderful news. Now, not only will I be able to see AUGUST, but also, one of my favorite Shakespearian Plays as well. With one of my favorite actors in the lead role. It's a good day! Thanks for the news Yankee.

Well not a guarantee - just another tidbit from the gossip rags.

the scottish play will not be at the Imperial - the whole reason why August has to move out is because of construction which will take all summer
perhaps it'll move into the Cort after Homecoming wraps up, but def not the imperial
The Scottish play might take either the Cort or the Lyceum.

I heard 39 steps was gonna take the Cort
Yay! :) LOVE this show.
Very smart on their part
The Imperial is too big for a straight play. The Music Box is perfect
It's hard for me to believe that The Scottish Play is going to go into the Imperial. When, they need time to renovate the theatre to make room for the Billy Elliot set. If they needed a big theatre for the scottish play then a suggestion I have is the Broadway. It is free until Shrek comes into town in the fall.
I can understand Augest changing theatres due to the fact that it is doing well at the box office. Well enough to turn into an open ended run rather then being a limited run. However, I don't see The Scottish Play getting a fair run if they have to make things very brief to make room for Billy Elliot.
what is the size difference between the Music Box stage and the Imperial? Because that set is a beast, and even though I was in the mezz, it still seemed to go to the top of the proscenium...
will they re-size?
Music Box- 1010
Imperial - 1421
*edit: seating capacity, that is...
I think they would have to. The imperial has a very large stage whereas the Music Box is a tad smaller. If memory serves it played at a theatre that was smaller then the Imperial when it was in Chicago. That makes me think that if it played in a smaller theatre there then it can play in a smaller theatre then its current Broadway home
Does this happen a lot on Broadway?
Are we sure that the cast is leaving? I know that Amy Morton is leaving because of her upcoming project of Superior Donuts in Chicago, but what about the rest of the cast? I would hate to see them go, but I would love to see the replacements as well. I've never paid more attention to a play than I have with August, so I would be able to spot all the differences.
I think as of now Amy is the only one leaving..unless I missed something.

I would think Amy would want to stay and see if she snags a Tony, but I suppose she can still win even though she's no longer there.
It's not about Morton wanting to stay or not, though. She has been committed to direct Letts' new play for a while. She could still win a Tony regardless, though I think most pundits think the Tony is Deanna Dunagan's to lose (haven't seen the play so don't really know).
Newyorkcurious,
When you ask does this happen a lot on Broadway. Are you making a reference to a play or a musical changing theatres?
If so then it is not common at all with a play. Most plays with an open ended run usually play about six to seven months and then call it quits. That is why producers have realized that it would end up coasting less money in the long run if they opened up new plays as limited runs. August was opened up as a limited run for the same reason. No one expected the success that this show is getting. That is why they realized that they can still make money off of it and they are spending the money for the transfer as oppose to closing it.
Now as for musicals. It doesn't really happen a lot but it does more often then plays. Musicals tend to make more money then plays do and run longer by far. So, if need be they can transfer. The most recent transfer was that of The Lion King to the Minskoff to make room for Poppins. And, I think the current Broadway musical with the most theatre transfers is Chicago. It opened up at the Richard Rogers Theatre for about a year or so. Spent a lot of time at the Shubert and then went to the Ambassador.
And Rentboy, she can still win the Tony if she isn't there. She opened the role on broadway therefor she is qualified for the award.
