re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I was just on Ticketmaster in an attempt to purchase tickets and to no avail. Can anyone enlighten me on whether or not same day tickets may be available, even a cancellation line situation?
Thanks so much,

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

Okay, seen it!

Wow...just wow. Exceeded all my expectations. Well-written, crafted, acted, directed, it's such an amazing piece of theatre. And the house! It would excite me so much to act on a set like that! Me and my friends were on the edge of our seats after Act Two finished, I actually can't believe how fast the time flew for a three and a half hour play! I was left wanting more!

Anyway, so glad I made the trip up to London to see this, twas a perfect way to start the new year :)

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I think I have a new favourite show. It was incredible. Regarding audiences, mine was full of American students, rather annoying but all I can say is thank god they shut up once it started, prior to the show they were lulling every audience member into a stupor with their renditions of 'Defying Gravity' and 'Popular' I believe they had a bit of SA going on too...I know not even THEY would've sang throughout it, but you know some people, saw Twilight the other day and had a row of those 10 year old cahvs who think they're hard, flicking chewing gum on the ceiling, throwing popcorn, at EVERYONE! Never shutting up, all the way though, I yelled, they called me a gayboy :/ I'll live!
But in a nutshell, see August: Osage County, it's worth it whatever you pay (£10! Hehe!)

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

Did anyone else see 900 Oneonta a few years back? A:OC is really reminding me of that.

And Sister, I avoid the National whenever I can because of the awful smugness stinking out the auditorium. I went to see Nunn's awful Royal Hunt of the Sun revival. It was plain dull. Yet at the interval, there were all these idiots basically congratulating themselves: "aren't we select?- we have expensive seats at the National!" They could have been watching Bless this House for all they cared. "It's sooo clever," etc. I wanted to run screaming from the building!

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

Yep i saw it at the Ambassadors twice - it is certainly in the same vein but I think 'August' is the stronger piece! (we posted the flier for that one remember?)

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I went to see Oedipus on a wednesday evening just before Christmas and the audience on average were 40+. We took up a whole row, and everyone around us was fine and lovely. The only difficult people sat a few rows behind us, and as we came in an older lady went up to one of our teachers with a wine in hand and said something along the lines of: "I hope your pupils aren't going to insist on eating sweets throughout this performance, i've paid good money for my seats!"
Thankfully he just replied: "They're 17/18, not 10. They all know how to behave in a theatre and have paid for their seats, the same as you have. And i hope you and you're friends don't insist on sipping on your wine throughout this performance" and came and sat down!

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I suppose it's common to get theatre snobs at the National.

The crowd around me though seemed to be loving it, wouldn't stop laughing and I heard the guy behind me say how well written it was.

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

Yeah, I only recently realized Eddie Izzard was in it! (Like going to see The Pillowman and not realizing David Tennant was in that! Sometimes I'm in a dreamworld!)

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I see on the National website that Onsage is now sold out.

I am not one for the plays, one is not refined enough for such a pleasure, however with what everyone is saying about this, I think I had to make an exception.

Any news on Onsage transferring to a West End stage or being extended?

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I do like the NT very much but it does have that 'air' about it.
We are very lucky to have it!

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I'd forgotten about this thread but having been to the National since the "smug and stupid" post I'm again reminded of how Sister George is right. And thank goodness Sam's teacher had a good retort to hand.

Maybe we need to make that "smug, old and stupid". I felt as though I was one of the youngest there and I'm old enough to be Sam's dad (just).

I was in the queue at the Lyttleton cafe and was sorely tempted to tap the snooty pensioner querying the menu in front of me on the shoulder and ask "If your intellect can't cope with the menu how are you going to understand the play?". They seemed to think they were in their local Surbiton restaurant rather than a self-service cafe.

Then ofcourse their friends have bagged all the tables so there's nowhere to sit and the grumpy, obnoxious sods don't want to share.

I think the National should have some sort of theatergoer-credibilty test before it sells a ticket to anyone.

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

The Official National Theatre Test

(for the younger crowd i.e. 45-65 this would be printed to resemble a copy of The Guardian and for the older crowd a copy of The Telegraph)

Q1 - Despite having no clue what you are about to watch at this performance have you informed anybody with a sh*t-eating grin that you were off to The National tonight?

If the answer to Q1 is yes could you kindly please punch yourself unconscious

Many Thanks

Question 2

Would you be equally happy just swanning around the foyer, displaying the glamorous frock you bought in 1978, rather than having to sit and watch some tedious rubbish you only marginally understand?

If yes, euthanase yourself.

Question 3

Do you not care what you are seeing as long as that nice Jeremy Irons is in it or the funniest man from the north, Alan Bennett, wrote it?

If yes, I refer you to Sister for suitable retribution.

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

Oh how true are all these things. re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT The area I work in has many of these ladies. They say "oh, I'm off to see a play at the National" and I get all excited and go "HI! What're you going to see? Let's discuss it! re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT", because I really do get excited when I have fellow theatre fans to talk to.

I think - and let's not bring this up in a childish fashion should I end up having a blazing row with any of you in the future - the reason I tend not to succeed at theatre-based job interviews on the whole is because I get a little too carried away on tangents because it's just so thrilling to have a conversation with someone who knows what I'm talking about! XD

So I ask these ladies what they're going to see, and they haven't a frickin' clue. They just know it's at the National. I offer options, I ask if they know which bit, but they haven't the foggiest. I try to bond, but if it's all about the venue and you don't care what's happening onstage, then how can we be friends? re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

It's very sad.

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

A matinee, a Pinter play, perhaps a piece of Mahler's...

Why not? The National and the South Bank Centre are right next to each other...

Make a whole day of it and include The Hayward!

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I have never been to the National theatre, just mt path has never taken me there.

Disagree with Mama on his last post, go and La Cage aux Folles, then take a trip to the National Gallery and see there wonderful collection there, they have a wonderful talk on a Rubenn painting!

I am going to do that today, except see the matinee production of The Sound of Music, late hitch in my plans I indented to see Wicked, but left it too late to book a ticket on Get into London Theatre.

May try to see Onsage in New York, as I have a spare vacency as Gypsy is now closing early.

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

As someone who easily fits into the euthanise them age range, the problem with audiences (ie anyone who isn't like yourself)
can occur anywhere.
In cosmopolitan Norwich, the worst bunch are during Glynbourne's annual visit...the county set are out in force, impolite and noisy. I wear my scruffiest t shirts and jeans to annoy.
I actually like the National probably best of all London theatres, if only for the foyers, views over the river etc, (not forgetting generally comfortable seats, decent sightlines and usually cheaper than west end prices..where's this expensive idea come from?)
Although I could tell about this even older than us couple in the Olivier who were reading their programme to each other during the show, and then got narky when someone reasonably pointed out it was a bit distracting to other members of the audience (and they had a torch!)

LOL
The Hayward Gallery is probably the most boring gallery in London!
