re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I must be one of the few people who doesn't care who else is sitting in the dark alongside me - so long as they don't talk, rustle bags, use a torch to read their programme or otherwise disrupt my enjoyment of the play, I couldn't care less!
#53

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I too do not care who I sit next to in the theatre as long as they are non-disruptive. However, I believe I have explained my heartbreak about thinking I've found a fellow theatre fan away from the theatre with whom to converse, only to find out I've just met yet another "lady who lunches". :P

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I hope those 'ladies who lunch' remove their hats prior to curtain up!
Does anyone still wear a hat?
#55

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I'd wear one more often if I could afford to get my haberdashery from Bates. I just hope to stay smart.

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

Today we have announcements in theatres about the switching off of mobile phones etc but up until the mid 80s they were made to remind ladies to remove their hats!

I have many many programs with that request on the centre page, I'll see if I can dig one out.

Funny thing about the producers of Hats! The Musical...they were responsible for putting the rather infamous BKLYN on Broadway. Their current project is edgier than BKLYN and certainly more controversial than Hats: it's a little show called "White Noise." And oh the stories there are to tell about that one.

"for the younger crowd i.e. 45-65 this would be printed to resemble a copy of The Guardian"

And what will it be printed to resemble for those of us under 45? Metro? Attitude? The Big Issue? Or can we download it onto our i-pod?
#61

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

The three of us who are under 45 and visit the National don't need to do the quiz, because we're there for the show and not some bizarre display of prestige.

Although I'd hope any school groups would have it photocopied with that awesome purple ink they used to use WAY back in the day. re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

In Stockpot on Old Compton St they have only just stopped using one of those purple ink printers for the menus!

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

Aha! This should be one of the great WE Board personality quiz questions: Are you loyal to Stockpot or West End Kitchen? I find people are generally fans of one or the other but almost never both.

Stockpot!
I know very few if any who go to West End Kitchen.
West End Kitchen staff are a bit stern, one old guy there, downright rude!
Stockpot opposite The Comedy Theatre is OK but doesn't have the atmosphere of the Compton Street one.
I miss Pollo that used to be next door to Compton Street the new one is naff!

Weez: You're missing out. While Stockpot and WEK (where I've never had issues with the staff) won't win any culinary awards, you can get a three course meal with drink for under a tenner. Both are frequented by show casts in the immediate area on two show days because of the low price and speedy turnaround.

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

I'm afraid when it comes to Stockpot and West End Kitchen I'm strictly in the 'a plague a' both your houses' camp.

It may be cheap but it's also an English celebration of the culinary mediocre. You might as well go to Tesco get a ready meal and then pay one of them a corkage fee to reheat it in their microwave.

Those under 45 will have to take the quiz on Facebook but only as a Facebook app on iPhone (the app will probably be called iSmug).

Though as Weez says generally those over 16 and under 45 who go to the National post here and were covered as exempt back on Page One.

The annoying smug pretentious crowd under 30 tend to go to the Royal Court and they don't need a quiz, just a good smack and to be forced to go watch Hairspray.

I know I should really take the very admirable approach of Eastwickian, and as someone who has generally been to the theatre by themselves since my teens I've always been of the opinion that it doesn't matter what you wear and it doesn't matter who you sit with or if you go with anyone as once the lights go down and the point of the evening begins that's all irrelevant - it's just that somehow the smug stoopids always manage to annoy me in the 30 seconds before the shows starts, the 15 mins at half-time and then particularly on the way out!

Food for Thought around the corner from the Donmar is my favourite West End cafe.

Nest time I go to the National I'm going to try the third floor mezz place in the hope that the Surbiton Smugs can't make it up the stairs.

Actually the Royal Court isn't hip or edgy enough for the pretentious under 30 crowd. They go to the Barbican Pit, 503, BAC, and wherever the devised group of choice are.

And believe it or not, I knew people getting theatre MA's who proudly boasted that they'd never seen a musical, and that there was no artistic merit in such base entertainments. Sadly it was their advisor who set our fall term crash course London theatregoing list of things to see so we conveniently ended up at a parade of devised works and utter ****e like the Gate's Car Cemetery and Rider Spoke but they couldn't arrange a discount for a group of 50 to see something from the commercial sector. The closest we got was War Horse and Masque of the Red Death (which thankfully sold out before anybody could book - I wear spectacles and would have been MISERABLE trying to see under those masks.)

"Food for Thought around the corner from the Donmar is my favourite West End cafe."

Despite being a veg, I wasn't particularly impressed when I ate there though it was years ago when I visited as a tourist. I keep meaning to give them another try.

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

Do you know any other good veggie places in central London Exedore?

The only other I know is in Neals Yard further up from Food For Thought but I don't like that (too many variations on cabbage - I get enough of that with audiences at the National).

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

There's Mildred's, which is on the expensive side (£16ish for a three course meal) but they also have a small cafe/bakery/coffee shop attached. The puddings are absolutely amazing. They're at 45 Lexington St. W1F.

I know there's supposed to be a few other places, but a lot of veg restaurants seem to think that people will pay a high premium in exchange for actually having menu selection, so I don't go very often.

re: AUGUST: Osage County @ NT

Ahh good point exedore, just realised it's ages since I've been to the Royal Court but on my last visit there was a lot of earnest young arty students (they didn't look like theatre students, more art or fashion students to be honest).

Is ICA still on the pu30 list?

(I do like a nice site specific show - give me a few nice rooms to explore and I can almost excuse the occasional cringey interaction, terrible narrative and lousy script)
