I heard Avenue Q had Rights out. I want to get the play and Do it but I dont know where I can find them. That is if what I heard was True. Does anyone know where or if this is true?
It's not true.

Why would you care sweetie? Hmmm? It's not like you can put THAT show on at the local middle school. Besides, it wouldn't be worth it to put it on for an adult audience anywhere else since you would go into the red before you even opened with that dog of a piece.
Put your money on something with some real potential for production, like, I dunno...WICKED!
I definatley heard there were scripts out from a friend that wants to do it as a forensics peice. I shall ask him where to find it as well.
Musical Selection will be GREAT though do you know when that will be out!
Dont get me wrong I LOOOOOVE WICKED
But Avenue Q would be MUCH easier to do. PLUS it didnt win best musical for nothing. Also it is Funny and people like funny. Wicked is By Far my Favorite though. I am only thinking in Ease of theatrics though.
It's out already. Check Amazon (though I heard other online stores will get it to you faster).
But yeah, the rights won't be available for a LONG time. And besides, it'll be a tough show to do, if you want to do it right. How many skilled Henson-style puppeteers do you know?
good point! But its probably not as hard as making someone fly in a crappy auditorium

Good Lord. Do you really believe that managing all those puppets is easy??? It's annoying and a PITA!!! It's also a show that does NOT lend itself to school productions. HELLO! WICKED on the other hand has the proper mix of easy songs and plumb roles for all you little high school thesbians to vie for.
I mean, come on, what girl isn't going to want to play either Elphaba or Glinda??? THese are dream roles for highschoolers and I bet we'll be seeing this show for decades to come in schools.
As for "flying" during WICKED, well, all any highschool production will need is a few guys from the football team and a good length or rope. Elphba will be "Defying Gravity" in no time.
LOL, I love how this thread has turned into an Avenue Q vs. Wicked debate of sorts.
I'd like to think that the two shows aren't rivals, but contemporaries, thank you very much.
Thanks for all the help guys I like all the imput. Heck When does Wicked Come out. LOL jk
Rights for either show won't be released any time soon.
Stagerage2003, there is no way that anyone could use something from Avenue Q as a forensics piece. Too risque for H.I. Your friend would get disqualified in a minute.

I always thought it would be cool to do Avenue Q for HI. However I wouldn't want to bastardize it or anything, so I'd be scared to try it. BUT ANYWAYS, I know someone from a neighboring school that competes in speech who has a copy of the Avenue Q script. They got it somewhere in NY, I doubt they will be competing with it though.
If anyone doesn't mind me asking, I was glad to see some of ya'll do forensics...where are you guys from?
DG2 - are you trying to be witty/funny in any of your posts? It's coming across like you're TRYING...to no success. What are you, 13? And if you use the word "sweetie" one more time, I might have to slap you, and/or vomit from an overdose of your word usage.
I live in Las Vegas and did Forensics last year. I love it!

I'm in Texas, and this year will be my 4th year competing, it's awesome!
Cool! What's your favorite event? I love HI and DI, but I haaaaaaate Lincoln Douglas.

Haha,I've done LD before, it was a badd experience. In Texas we can do as many events as we want. So at every tournament I usually do HI, DI, duet/duo, prose, poetry and oratory. However HI is my favorite event.
Rights will be avalable next year after the show has closed.
Ah I'm so excited now!
do you think that when the rights are licensed that lyon will capitolize on it by offering puppet rentals?
I can't see why Lyon wouldn't do that. It sounds like a very smart deal for him, as puppeteering is a very limited field, and he could keep supporting himself--not that he's in any great need to. It looks like Avenue Q has a long life ahead.
Of course, it would be expensive as all get out, but I can see some edgier theatre companies willing to pay some money to rent those famous puppets to do this show in the future.
Oh...and to DefyingGravity2: do you even attempt to filter the words that come out of your brain and onto the internet? You give admirers (as well as fans, though non-insane fans) of Wicked a bad name.

Puppet rental is done by MTI for LSOH. However it is expensive and not worth it because you are only able to work with the puppets for two weeks. It is much easier to build them. However I don't know what they will do with Q.
By the way I know Lyon (friend of a friend) he is a very nice man.

The rights to any Broadway show are held exclusively by the Broadway producers until the show has closed. Only then will stock and amateur rights become available.
...And to add to what another person said on this post, Avenue Q will not be an easy show to do because of all the puppets. It's a cute and clever idea for Broadway, where the talent pool is nearly unlimited, but for a community theatre?
Unfortunately, as funny and wonderful as the show is, it will probably not have a huge life after Broadway, which, by the way is where most shows reap the majority of their royalty income.
