In AVENUE Q's finale "For Now", after George Bush's term ends, will they use the name of the new president?
BEFORE:
"...George Bush is only for now..."
AFTER
"...(new president's name here) is only for now..."

Cross the bridge when they get there.
They almost had to in 2004. I'm sure they had no idea they'd actually be open in 2004, the same way I'm sure they have no idea if they'll be open in 2008.
re: 'AVENUE Q' Question... just wondering#2
Posted: 2/2/07 at 10:44pmI think it could still be funny with George Bush.

Posted: 2/2/07 at 11:03pmMy guess is that they'll change it to the new president when it happens, but we'll see

I remember some guy that was standing near me asking this to one of the actors at the stagedoor when I was there, and the answer that he got was that they would change it to whomever the new president was.

nf2, why wouldn't the writers put a democratic president's name in the song even if they were democrats?
I mean, in the same verse they mention sex and hair, so it doesn't have to have a negative conotation

I'm sure it's going to be changed, but "Bush, Only for Now!" would still be ok, I think.
It's the general point and I think the audience will catch on.

It is VERY clear that the writers are making a political statement. Have you seen the show? They are saying times may suck now, but they are only for now and things will get better. George Bush is pretty sucky, but he is only for now- things will get better. Why would they say that about the democratic president?
I remember there was a lot of talk about this during the last presidential election, and I belive the writers said they would come up with something else.

Yeah, I've seen it 4 times and have been following it since it was off-broadway
Besides a democratic president could still be a president with political baggage and we don't know for sure if we will have a democratic president. Even if they didn't change it specifically to the name of the president it could still be a political issue. When the cast performed the song on Jerry Lewis' MDA telethon, they changed the line to "MD" is only for now. Who knows, "Bird Flu is only for now" could be HUGE in 2008. But I wouldn't completely negate that the writers wouldn't use the new president's name as an option

Um....
saying "George Bush is only for now" in 2008 will make absolutely no sense. Come now....

Exactly.

re: 'AVENUE Q' Question... just wondering#17
Posted: 2/3/07 at 10:53amI'm sure there are plenty of two-syllable names or phrases out there that they can use to nearly the same reaction. It would be interesting to see what they pick, though.

This probably isn't going to happen but...
If they kept the "George Bush" one...
It would prove that he WAS only for "NOW." And like the point of the song, things move on...

yea i think
"George Bush was only for THEN" would be funny and get a few laughs!

Posted: 2/3/07 at 12:11pmHey, everyone who's saying that it's a jab at Bush because they're Democrats and wouldn't do the same to a Democrat president... they also say sex is only for now. Is that a jab at sex? Do they dislike sex?

yeah, but sex and hair isn't sucky. I think you are trying to make a political issue out of something that isn't really THAT deep.
edit: They also say that for now they're employed, as well as overjoyed. they are saying that nothing lasts, everything ends, or changes.
except for death and paying taxes, of course.

Some people should go back to grammar school. "Was" is past tense and "Now" is present tense. It is grammatically incorrect. Not to mention it is just stupid.

I was just going to say that.
If I went to see AVENUE Q in 2008 and they said "GEORGE BUSH WAS ONLY FOR NOW" I would throw tomatoes at the stage.

Posted: 2/4/07 at 2:57pmJust because a president is a democrat, doesn't mean that he or she won't do things that will be laughable. Saturday Night Live made fun of every president since the show was created, be they democrat or republican.
