Posted: 7/1/07 at 8:12pmI performed a search on this and couldn't find anything, so I'm just curious to know if anyone has an idea as to when the actors generally arrive at the theatre before a matinee performance. On the Broadway.com backstage videos it always seems like they are hanging out backstage at least an hour before showtime but it's always hard to judge. Any insight would be great, thanks!

Posted: 7/1/07 at 8:14pmWhen I talked to Fantasia before The Color Purple (She's so nice) she said she is required to be there an hour before the show. When i saw it she got there at 7:26 and the show didn't start till like a quarter after 8.

But it can depend on makeup requirements of course.
No matter what, you have to be there by half hour, even if you don't appear until Act II.
Last time I heard, swings and standbys just have to check in by half hour, and then they can go off somewhere if they want. They just have to be within 15-minute distance from the theatre, and they must be easily contacted (cell phones/beepers) in case something happens to the person in the track they understudy.

Posted: 7/1/07 at 8:37pmI did that for Sweeney Todd once, and it wasn’t met with the best response. They tend to find it creepy so I don’t do it anymore. Wait at the stangdoor after the show like a semi-normal person.

Stage dooring before the show is generally not accepted.
Yankeefan is right, though. They can come in any time after 10 or 12 on Sundays. There are some actors who like to get there super early, and some who push the half-hour call.

Posted: 7/1/07 at 8:52pmUsually it's an hour before. Some like to arrive an hour and a half before or so and sometimes if you aren't on until later in the show you aren't required to be there until half hour.
