Can anyone think of any?
This means, they honestly have no talent in the singing area and thus, are not in musicals but only plays.
This is not 'who you think can't sing that is in a musical.'
well...im going to ignore your detailed explanation of what this thread should be about and say..."Rosie ODonnell can not sing, and why anyone would cast her in a musical is beyond me. She is the singing Car Horn."
Tim Curry
Shoshona Bean (But only in Wicked)
I Think shes awesoem but she couldnt hit the notes!

Natasha Richardson - though you know, I actually... enjoyed her in Cabaret. She sure couldn't sing, though. Yikes.

I really was against David Ayer's voice in Wicked. Don't know about his other stuff, but by the end of his run in Wicked, it was just...sad. At least for me. And I think the main reason Shoshana was not so great in the last few months of her run was from her being sick for so long, am I right? I mean, when I saw her back in November, she was just a coughing mess. Still loved her voice anyway though.
Yeah, Rosie just can't sing.
But I would consider Natasha a "non singer" which is different from someone who just can't plain sing at all. A non singer can carry a tune quite good, and they can really sell a number - but they don't have great singing technique nor range. That is Natasha. I question if Rosie can even carry a tune.

This topic makes no sense.
This means, they honestly have no talent in the singing area and thus, are not in musicals but only plays.
Isn't the answer...EVERYONE who only does straight drama?

Findyourgrail- Often people who can sing are in straight plays.

Well, DUH! I'm not a simpleton.
That's why I said the answer is people who ONLY do straight drama. Not people who fluctuate between both.

There are lots of actors who never perform in musicals who can sing to some extent, but for one reason or another don't or prefer not to. I was surprised a few seasons back to see Swoosie Kurtz and Cherry Jones singing in IMAGINARY FRIENDS (which was a straight play with a few musical interludes). Neither is ready to take on Rose in GYPSY, but they could carry a tune.
If they are only ever in straight plays how would we know if they could sing or not anyway?

What I was saying is what Margo sorta said
"There are lots of actors who never perform in musicals who can sing to some extent, but for one reason or another don't or prefer not to."
My question is: Who acts in a straight play BECAUSE they cannot sing and would not get hired for a musical?
How about "who could act in a straight play because we know,(or we think),they couldn't pull off a musical?"--Just another thought.
My vote is for: Jennifer Lopez : )
Sweet, don't get so literal that you get dissected alive, smile.

It's kind of a silly question... if they can't sing and would not be hired for a musical... obviously they have not been in a musical, and we have not heard them sing...
Aside from all that, maybe they just don't want to do musicals. I have vocal training and perform with four musical ensembles, but I would much rather perform in Much Ado About Nothing than Guys & Dolls.
There's nothing wrong with JUST being a talented actor.
Michael Hayden. He's been in a ton of musicals but can barely carry a tune. I think the reason he keeps getting cast is because he's a brilliant classical actor.

John Lithgow can carry a tune.
But I wouldn't say he's a singer.

margo, you are always "right on" and many a day, you "make my day" with your incredible wit and amazing knowledge! thanks!
How about Mary Louise Burke?
She proved in the ITW revival that she simply cannot carry a tune. How she was cast in that show is beyond me. Even on the cast recording you can tell she was lost. And live....I've never seen a conductor have to work so hard to keep everything together (she had no sense of rhythm and kept changing tempos).

I think you'd surprised, as Margo says, who out there CAN carry a tune. Celebs who would surprise you with their vocals:
Cate Blanchett, Gwenyth Paltrow, Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger (BBM the musical, anyone?) Kim Basinger, Amy Irving, Jennifer Garner, Kate Winslet, Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise and Jim Carey all sing extremely well.
Two celebs who are known for being tone deaf are Drew Barrymore and Winona Ryder. And I guess you can now add Jenna Elfman to that list.
