"There were four Matildas. I thought they deserved their award myself."
It seemed to me that the four Matildas getting a "special Tony" was akin to the Tonys giving them a booby prize because they weren't eligible to be nominated. And the Tonys should not give booby prizes.
And that same year, the kids from A CHRISTMAS STORY were quite exceptional. Johnny Rabe had great pipes and comic timing to boot. But the kids in that show truly seemed to be an ensemble; they worked so well together. And of course, Luke Spring. What can you say about Luke Spring?
I saw Matilda right about the same time and I thought the kids in that show seemed very "polished", but the kids in ACS seemed more real. And Johnny Rabe did 6 shows a week and he was phenomenal. It seemed like the 4 Matildas got it "just because", but I've always felt the kids from ACS would have been a better choice.
When Pasquale didn't get a nom for BRIDGES I was aghast. I can only imagine how he felt and sincerely hope the voters will acknowledge him when he returns with CAROUSEL (or WILD PARTY?)
Also, I found it odd that Kelli O'Hara wasn't nominated for a drama desk this year.. and yet she won the Tony. A little suspicious.. love her! :)

I think they nominated the wrong Featured Actress from the Follies revival that year. Jayne Houdyshell was very good, but Terri White's "Who's That Woman" completely brought the house down. Judy Kaye would have still won, and deservedly so, but White should have gotten a nomination.
Surprised to see that Erin Davie in "Grey Gardens" hasn't been mentioned yet. I think Mary Louise deserved the Tony, but Davie should have been nominated, for sure.
Cliche as that is, Aaron Tveit in next to normal deserved the Tony, his portrayal of Gabe was haunting. It was so layered, he was charming and menacing, everything the character was. I couldnt take my eyes off of hm when he was onstage (the way he looked at Dan/Robert J. Spencer when he told his wife how their sond had died... 'with one look i can break your heart', to quote Sunset Boulevard)
And Rachel Bay Jones should at least have been nominated. In my opinion she should have won the Tony over Andrea because she turned a boring character into a scene-stealer and Andrea had the direction, choreography and song she sang on her side, while Rachel Bay Jones had none (not that her numbers weren't well directed, they were good, but we all know that they didnt even come close to Andrea's big number). But that's something that has already been thoroughly discussed here!
And Barbara Walsh in Company. One of the most beautiful performances Ive ever seen.

I thought Kara Lindsay was deserving of a nomination for Newsies, except she had the misfortune to make her Broadway debut in a season featuring Audra McDonald, Kelli O'Hara, Jan Maxwell, Laura Osnes, and Cristin Milioti. So, yeah ...
I agree Rachel Bay Jones should have been nominated for Catherine in Pippin.

I'm 85% sure she would have been nominated as a featured actress. But I think her song is super hard to pull off and she did it perfectly.
I seem to vaguely recall the Tony committee deciding that Kara Lindsay would compete in the Leading category. I might be wrong though!
These are things that I think should have been NOMINATED, but I'm not sure that all should have WON:
- Rachel Bay Jones in PIPPIN
- Norbert Leo BUTZ in BIG FISH
- Kate Baldwin in BIG FISH
- Erin Davie and Emily Padgett or just Davie in SIDE SHOW
- SIDE SHOW for Best Revival
- Bill Condon for SIDE SHOW
- Erin Dilly in A CHRISTMAS STORY
- Lisa Howard in IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU
- THE VIST and SIDE SHOW for Best Scenic Design
- Faith Prince in ANNIE (I know she wasn't eligible because she replaced, but I thought her performance would have been recognized if she had played Hannigan instead of Finneran)
- Marin Mazzie in BULLETS OVER BROADWAY
- [TITLE OF SHOW] for Best Musical
- Raul Esparza in LEAP OF FAITH
- Bette Midler in I'LL EAT YOU LAST
- CHAPLIN for Costume Design
- Zachary Levi in FIRST DATE
- Kristine Nielson in YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU
- Betsy Wolfe in THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD
Obviously, I have a lot of opinions lol.

I agree with all of the Side Show posts as well especially with Padgett and Davie getting nominated and best revival
Another vote for Barbara Walsh in Company, I found her performance so moving.
"I seem to vaguely recall the Tony committee deciding that Kara Lindsay would compete in the Leading category. I might be wrong though!"
"Ben Fankhauser, Jeremy Jordan and Kara Lindsay will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by a Leading Actor/Actress in a Musical categories for their respective performances in Newsies."
You're right! My mistake.
Lila Crawford should have at least been nominated for Annie.
Agreed on Lisa Howard and Barbara Walsh.
I have a couple that have not been/will not be eligible for any number of reasons:
Kate Baldwin in GIANT (that should have transferred)
jane Lynch in ANNIE (had she opened the show, she would've won)
Brian d'Arcy James in HAMILTON (said from day 1 that he would at least be nominated if he stayed with it)
""But I think her song is super hard to pull off and she did it perfectly."
She did, plus she's just a natural actress, with great comedic timing. It makes me curious to see her Glinda.

Oh!! Nikki Snelson in "Legally Blonde"!! Huge snub.
"Bryce Pinkham-The Heidi Chronicles"
YES. And although she wouldn't have won, I thought Tracee Chimo should've been nominated.
