Can someone please tell me... Am I the ONLY person bored to sleep by this video footage, and Pascal's performance shown here?
I mean, sure... he's got great pipes. But this video was BOORING.

Posted: 1/10/12 at 12:27pmIt's just the portion they chose to show. I agree it doesn't really give you a flavor of what his Huey is like. But his voice is terrific as usual.

Posted: 1/10/12 at 2:28pmYeah, aside from the vocals, I don't think those clips give the best sense of his performance. I'll take any video I can get and he sounds great, but I too thought they chose surprisingly slow moments. One of the best things about his performance is that he has this absolutely infectious, goofy energy and you don't get that at all from these clips. I know there's that big money note in Memphis Lives in Me, but this would have served him better if it had shown a moment from Radio, or with Felicia in Act 1 or something.

The clip is also from November, a month into his run if it made any difference. You can tell from the cast- Nancy Opel is still there with Paul McGill, and Bahiyah Hibah(now of Chicago)'s replacement Carmen is also in the video. That only happen for like two weeks.
Anyways, say him two weeks ago at the end of December and thought he was fantastic. it was a Wednesday matinee, though, and he didn't riff during the end of Memphis Lives in Me, as he has said in interviews he would probably only do it for night shows, but he did sustain the note so clearly. Great vocalist.
Side note, again haha- show is in great shape. The ensemble is awesome, Cass Morgan is back giving it her all, and standouts are still James Iglehart and Rob Hartwell.

I saw him in November, and he was equally as awesome as he was two weeks ago. It wasn't one of those "Oh, he just started, he'll grow into it" performances. I definitely think it's the moments in the video -- I mean, the end of Memphis Lives In Me is about standing there and singing your face off, and Steal Your Rock 'n Roll is mostly just Huey standing there either looking awkward about being on stage or staring in awe at Felicia. Not exactly moments that highlight his personality.
I've been to a handful of evening performances and haven't seen that riff yet. But they were during holiday weeks with tough schedules. I really want to, though, I bet it's killer live.
I agree, though, everyone is on their game, which is great to see in a long-running show. I especially give a lot of credit to Montego, who has been there forever and whose performance isn't the least bit stale. She's so great.

Forget to mention J. Bernard Calloway! I've seen his "She's my Sister" four times live, and this past time was just so good. He performed it like I haven't seen it before, and he was on fire for my show. And Derrick is still singing the ... out of Say a Prayer.
Has anyone seen understudies as Delray, Bobby, or Gator? Would love to know how they are.

I saw an understudy for Delray, but I can't remember when or who, and my Playbills are in New York, where I am not. Sorry!
But whoever it was was great!

shrekster, I saw Rhett on for Gator back in July 2010 and he was great! Dan'yelle, Bryan and Jennifer were all on that same night as well.

Posted: 1/10/12 at 8:09pmNot meaning to thread jack, but i figure with all the amazing plays that are running with some pretty stellar casts as well as the new musicals and revivals to this season i wondered if the show was worth catching or waiting til it hits regional theatres. But I do love Pascal thus the question.

At the moment, officially, through April.
Well, Memphis will be around, yeah. And I hear the tour is great and well-cast. Frankly, I guess it depends on your level of feeling toward Adam as a performer. I've been a die-hard fan of his since I was in high school (and now I'm well into my 20s), and I don't live in New York anymore so I've had to choose carefully when I get a few days in town. I've given up opportunities to see a few other, newer things to get to go see Adam play Huey more than once. Trust me, it wasn't an easy decision, but I haven't regretted the choice at all. There's something kind of unexplainably wonderful for me about getting to see him do a musical, and ultimately, that won out. But... that's just me.
My feeling, as a fellow fan with the biggest bias on the planet, is that if you like him and you really like his voice, it's worth it; he gets to show off his pipes and he sounds incredible, and I think the role is a great fit for him. It's a fun, expected performance that's really different from anything you've seen him do before. I had seen Memphis when it first opened, and while I had a good time, was generally pretty indifferent toward it. But having gone back to see Adam, I've actually really come to like the show a lot; his performance made a big difference for me, and so if you really dig his work, obviously it'll impact how you feel about the experience as a whole. I'm sure it would still be solid and fun somewhere else, but that's my two cents.

Posted: 1/10/12 at 10:44pmI've seen Robert Hartwell as both Gator and Bobby and he was fantastic in both roles! I prefer his Gator to his Bobby though....his "Say A Prayer" is one of the most chill-inducing moments I have ever seen. I have been an Adam fan for a while too, but this video just doesn't do it for me. His Huey annoys me and just rubs me the wrong way. I guess I'm just a Chad girl.

Posted: 1/11/12 at 3:44pmI've been to NYC a week ago and saw 4 Broadway Musicals. (Billy Eliott, Rock of Ages, Sister Act and Memphis) I have to tell that I liked Memphis most. In my eyes Adams performance was great, way better than Chad K.

Look closely at the video clip at 01:22 ... looks like they slipped in a shot or two that still includes Chad Kimball.
As for seeing understudies... I saw it for the 2nd time tonight and Ken Robinson was on as Delray. He was great...
The other understudy who was on tonight was Sasha Hutchings (an African American actress) in the role of "White Teenager." She was a wonderful performer... but a bit odd to see her in that role, getting slapped by her uptight white father for listening to R&B music...
